I enjoyed working with Avis, she was always very helpful and happy
I remember her bell on her desk, that 6th graders could ring the last day of their 6th grade year
My daughter, Rebecca had her for her fourth grade year. That was the year before Boos was closed and the students and teachers  had to movE to Eastwood

Several years ago I was hospitalized for a case of pneumonia at Orange Coast Memorial Hospital.   Nobody enjoys being hospitalized, but you can imagine my amazement and joy when I discovered my "roommate" was Avis Castillo!   My three kids had gone through their entire formative years at Boos School and she was their 4th grade teacher.  She was loved by all!  Avis and I brought each other up-to-date as to how our lives had gone and then shared interesting genealogy about our backgrounds.  We passed a lot of time those 4-5 days, sharing stories.   I wouldn't have traded that wonderful experience for anything!  I'm so grateful I was able to thank her for her wonderful guidance and love she gave to all her students.  Definitely looking forward to seeing her, again, in heaven!    

I remember many things of Mrs. Castillo.  

Her smile was a soft and welcoming smile.  Always comforting and gentle.

I remember paperback books.  Boxes of them.  She loved to read and without knowing it, she past that love of reading on to me.

"PINEAPPLE UPSIDE DOWN CAKE" !!  She made one for Gordie's birthday and I had a piece.  OMG.  Best cake ever.  Later she showed me how to make it.

To para-phrase :
Give me a pineapple upside down cake and I will eat for a day.  Show me how to bake it and I will eat for a lifetime.

Whenever I would make it, people would ask for the recipe.  I would think of Mrs. Castillo and tell them the story.  My entire family, untold numbers of neighbors, friends and acquaintances are lovers of this simple dessert, because of Mrs. Castillo.  

Your legacy to me is this simple dessert from a great lady.

Rest in peace

My prayers of peace and comfort to her  family.  Heaven has recieved a wonderful person.  Mrs. Castillo was a wonderful teacher.  I enjoyed her so much in 4th grade many years ago at Boos School.  She taught me so much about California  history.  She will always have a place in my heart and memories.  God bless.

Mrs, Castillo was one of my favorite teachers. Even  hearing her name brings a smile to my face. She was patient, kind, and inspired us to be better people.
