Harvey was born in Long Beach, California to Luther and Lena Morris. Harvey’s father served in the US Navy and was stationed aboard the USS Tennessee at Pearl Harbor, HI. Lena and Harvey joined his father there, just prior to the bombing. Harvey was 16 months old. Although his father was not injured, this tragic event made a lasting impact on Harvey’s life and he was very proud to tell the story.
After WWII, the family moved to Westminster, CA where Harvey attended 17th St. School, then on to Huntington Beach High School for graduation. His further education was at CSULB where he received a BA degree in Education and a Masters in Administration. He began teaching at 17th Street school January 1963. From there he stepped up to a Principalship in the District, serving in many local elementary schools. He retired in 2000 from Willmore School.
In 1964, Harv met Lucia Codiano, also a teacher at 17th Street School, and they married in 1966 in Huntington Beach. Their son, Robert, was born in 1976. They resided in Huntington Beach since their marriage.
Harv, Lucia, and Robert loved spending their summers together, roaming the USA in their reliable RV, traveling to many National Parks. These travels included visits to ALL 50 States, visiting family along their routes. One of their favorites parks was Humboldt Redwoods State Park in Northern California.
After retirement, Harv and Lucia traveled to many different countries, enjoyed memorable cruises and tours, and for Harv, many hours were spent on the golf course with his friends. For a time, he worked as a “ranger” at the David L. Baker Golf Course, keeping players moving along. He loved tormenting that ever elusive “little white ball”!
For all who knew and loved Harvey, it was understood that his calmness, his huge sense of humor, his amazing great smile, would instantly tell you he was a friend indeed. There is no doubt he was the best role model and mentor to all the teachers who worked with him, which was then passed on, in turn, to the students they taught. His patience was unlimited; his talents for seeing the best in every student and teacher was beyond comparison.
He was so well loved by all who knew him, and was a “star” on both sides of the family. He was the one who named the in-laws in Lucia’s family, the “out-laws” and made sure they all lived up to that title. He enjoyed visits with his niece and nephew and found trips with them to Disneyland hard to resist. If you knew Harv, you could be sure there was a story and laugh in your future.
Harvey is predeceased by his parents, his brother, John, and his son, Robert.
Harv will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
