Sydney was born to Australian immigrant parents, Joseph and Letitia Davis, of February 8, 1913, in San Francisco, California. He was the youngest of three children. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Jody and Jack Gambs; his grandsons Steve Jones, Tim Jones and wife Caren, and James Jones and wife Inga; two great grandsons Cody Jones and Soren Vahlstrom; his niece Diane Beck and his nephew Bill Jefferson.
Syd was extremely proud of the fact that he was named after Sydney, Australia and would proudly inform people, "That's Sydney with a Y."
His childhood taught him the importance of love and to value the true meaning of family.
Syd met and married his precious wife, Margaret, in 1937. They were married for 62 years until she passed away on July 12, 1999. Their match was truly made in Heaven. They had on daughter, Jody.
In 1974, Syd, or as we lovingly called him...Gramps...became a volunteer father to his three grandsons Steve, Tim and James, when their father died. He taught his grandson the importance of honesty, integrity, unconditional love, and family.
Gramps was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, great grandfather and loyal friend treasured by all who knew him. For 50 years he was dedicated and devoted to his employer DD Dunlap Co. and family.
He loved his family, fishing, golf, gin rummy, and his evening cocktail of Smirnoff vodka rocks with a twist...or as he called it...his potato juice.
After his best friend Johnny Wallace passed away, Syd received the following note; "Syd, in Jonny's telephone book he kept a piece of paper on which he had written the following words: "Dignity, Integrity, Humility, Loyalty, Friends...these are the first words that always came to mind when I thing of Syd Davis."
Yes, he was all of these. But to me he was "my daddy." I would like to share a poem by Laurel Atherton. It was on a card I gave to my father years ago.
I Am Your Daughter
I am someone who loves you more that words can say.
I am the one you helped every step of the way along the path of life.
Your love was always there to brighten up my world;
your wisdom was there to help me learn.
Your patience and care were always there
to see me through all those difficult days of growing up.
And your sweetness and smiles were always there to make the path as
smooth as possible for me.
You have given so much that I can never repay. Thinking of it all makes me well up with tears that are overflowing with happiness and appreciation and thanks.
I am your daughter, and you are my dad. And that...to me...is one of the most wonderful things anyone could ever hope to be.
I Love You.
