1939-2017
Vanoy Theotis Scott passed away on Friday, March 17, 2017. He died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Huntington Beach, CA. Vanoy was born on November 8, 1939 in Greenville, SC, to R.C. Scott and Teloia Peters. He grew up in Columbus, OH.
Vanoy joined the United States Marine Corps on January 10, 1957. He went to basic training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, CA, and received further training at the Marine Corps Base in Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, HI. Vanoy served in Vietnam and was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps on July 10, 1962. His time in the Marine Corps had a profound affect on him. One of many examples is a lifelong love for California and Hawaii that began during his training in those two states. Vanoy said many times that joining the Marine Corps was one of the best decisions he had made in his life. Semper Fi.
After serving in the Marine Corps, Vanoy followed various pursuits, including playing football for the San Diego Chargers. In 1969 he began a career as a manager with Trans World Airlines in Los Angeles, CA. He was known by his co-workers as a great friend and mentor, and he cherished the friendships he made working there. Vanoy retired from the airline in 2001.
While working at TWA, Vanoy met his wife, Marie Annette Smith, who also worked for the airline. They were married on September 11, 1973, in Long Beach, CA. They settled in Huntington Beach, CA. Vanoy never wanted to live anywhere else--his dream was realized.
Vanoy was known by neighbors, friends, and family for the excellent fruit he produced in his garden and for cooking and enjoying the best food from around the world. He loved to read and watch mystery and espionage stories. He was a good neighbor and a friendly member of his community. After retirement, Vanoy became heavily involved as a volunteer at the Orange County Fair and Event Center Centennial Farm, where he gave tours to countless school children and his own children and grandchildren.
The most important part of Vanoy’s life was his family. He took seriously his role of husband and father, and sacrificed whatever was necessary to provide for his family. Vanoy loved his daughters and was proud of each of them. Among many other things, he took pride in the fact that all three of his daughters were college graduates from Brigham Young University, and he donated to the University every year. He loved and respected his sons in-law. He cherished his grandchildren.
Vanoy was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Linda Scott Marshall. He is survived by his wife; his daughter Sarah Scott Perez, her husband Don Perez, and their children Sophia Perez, Scott Perez, and Molly Perez of McKinney, TX; his daughter Elizabeth Scott Wycherly and her husband Benjamin Wycherly of West Hartford, CT; his daughter Rebekah Scott of Richardson, TX; his brother William Scott of Mitchelleville, MD; and his brother Wesley Scott of Columbus, OH.
