Borden Garry Terney, late of Regina, SK, passed away on Sunday, September 16, 2018 at the age of 79 after a lengthy illness. Born March 22, 1939 in Regina, Borden lived in the Gap View area on the Terney family farm near Hansworth, SK. As a child, Borden attended school in Gap View, Hansworth and Stoughton, worked as a farm hand for his uncles and grandpa and worked for Don and Joyce Knox at the Stoughton Esso. Work then led Borden away from Stoughton to positions on seismograph crews in northern Alberta and on the oil rigs around Saskatchewan. On October 7, 1966 Borden married the love of his life Betty Zopf in Forget, SK. They soon welcomed their 3 children Holly in 1967, Michael in 1969 and Michelle in 1973 making up their family. The Terneys lived in a number of communities, where Borden took on a variety of jobs. He worked as a meat cutter, hauled gravel, ran the Coop grocery store in Creelman and ran a Shell restaurant and garage in North Portal before Borden began school in Weyburn to certify as a Power Steam Engineer. His career as an engineer took him to Silverwood Dairies & the RCMP depot in Regina, to Nipawin CSP Foods plant and Wollaston Lake uranium mine. Nipawin was a much beloved community for Borden and the family where they loved to camp, fish, hunt and socialize with many friends. The family returned to Nipawin many times over the years and still have a strong connection there. Due to a work injury, Borden went on disability and eventually moved with Betty back to Stoughton. He retired not long after volunteering many years at the New Hope Lodge where he was an invaluable “adopted” son to many of the senior residents there who leaned on him and Betty to help out wherever they could. Borden spent much of his time helping his mother Barbara and Auntie Mary in their declining years. As well, Borden enjoyed volunteering around town and was a very active member of Stoughton’s community. Borden enjoyed his friends and socializing very much. He and Betty always had an open door, a full pot of coffee or a cold beer and a plate of supper for anyone who popped in to visit. Borden believed deeply in sharing what he had with whoever had a need for it, be it his time or his talents. His loving and giving nature made him a fast friend of many; his concern and his compassion for others made him a lifelong friend of many more. Borden enjoyed his many travels and experiences with his family including Cuba, Arizona and many places in the States and Canada especially if his leisure time involved outdoor activities on a lake, in the woods, or around a campfire. Borden was also a devoted member of the Elks, Masonic Lodge and the Royal Canadian Legion. Family was very important to Borden. He greatly influenced the lives of his family and extended family. His late mother and father-in-law Jack and Eleanor Zopf held his heart even after their deaths. And, of course, Borden enjoyed children of all ages, but most especially his grandchildren who filled his heart and gave him a new outlet for his wisdom and love. Borden’s last few years were nothing like his life. Borden’s health suffered and he was frustrated that it hampered his freedom and his interests. In his characteristic style, Borden rarely complained about his pain or his circumstances. He never wanted to be a burden to anyone because he truly desired to be in service to others. He was very grateful to his many visitors who took time to come see him at the hospital and at Wascana. He continued to make strong connections with people right up to his last days. Borden was predeceased by his father Bjorn Nelson, his grandparents, numerous aunts and uncles, and his mother Barbara Terney. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 51 years, Betty, daughter Holly (Steven) Gregg of Terrace, BC, and children Jessica, Meghan, and Erik; son Michael (Candice) Terney of Spruce Grove, AB and children Emily, Joshua, Elora, Luke and Siobhan; daughter Michelle (Steve) Sorensen of Vernon, BC and children Devin and Krisha; sisters Betty (Glen) Sollid of Strathmore, AB, Dee (Jay) Beamer of Strathmore, AB; sisters and brothers-in-law Bonnie Zopf, Brenda (Ron) Mills, Peter Zopf and Berni Zopf (Glen Lekach) and nieces and nephews and friends.
