To all of auntie Ella’s family, I wish to extend my belated condolences for the great loss of your beloved mother and grandmother. Auntie Ella kept in touch by phone with my mother, Simone Hortness & me usually over the Christmas holidays & then when my mother passed, we kept in touch once or twice a year for a few years. Sadly, we have not spoken for about three years, and I just recently learned of her passing. Auntie Ella was always so welcoming and kind, and I will remember her fondly. Aileen Usic

To Ella’s Family:

I had the good fortune to know Ella through Cheryl while attending college. I will always remember her welcoming heart when visiting in Manor. She was such a beautiful lady. My sincere condolences to Ella’s Family. May God Bless You All!

To all of Ella’s family,
My most Sincere Sympathy on the passing of your Mom& Grandma. I first met Ella when I made visits to her as her Home Care nurse. We shared a common interest when she told me she was originally from Manor and I shared I was raised at Kisbey. I enjoyed seeing her at services at Grace United Church and later at Parkway Lodge. I will remember her kindness. I am sorry that I will not be able to attend her service.
May your memories give you comfort …
Sincerely Connie Milligan.

A poem of memories of Grandma Hortness from her eldest grand daughter.

---
She stitched her love into fabric,
measured in careful seams and steady hands—
my first grown-up skirt suit, deep red,
autumn rich, the color palette we shared.

But her finest work was never ordinary.
It came alive in Halloween costumes—
mine, and even more bravely, her own—
proof that joy should always be worn boldly,
no matter the age.

She sewed memories meant to last:
a Barbie tent, a cloth activity book,
made with patience and purpose
for my twin daughters—
heirlooms I will pass on,
threaded with her love.

Her china waits for family dinners,
still doing what it always did—
bringing us together,
reminding us of the tables she filled
with food, laughter, and belonging.
And every Thanksgiving, I remember
how I wanted birthday cake more than pumpkin pie.
A recognition she never forgot for me or Aunt Roxy.

She shared herself generously:
through the United Church,
the Legion Auxiliary,
through companionship, service,
and the undeniable power of good food.
Her house was always open—
for games in the basement,
TV using the satellite dish,
as long as we respected one sacred rule:
not during her afternoon soaps.

Mornings found her at the café,
at Coffee Row,
where stories were exchanged like currency
and gossip was simply another form of connection.

And every time I walked in,
her eyes would light up,
a smile forming before the words—
“It’s Cathy.”
As if, each time,
I was a gift.

In another life, she would have been a historian—
remembering every event, every person,
every relationship across 99 years
in the Moose Mountain area.
Nothing and no one was ever truly forgotten.

She lived well.
She loved fully.
And she leaves behind a legacy
stitched into fabric, tradition, laughter, and care.

She will be remembered —
not quietly,
but warmly,
by all who had the good fortune
to know her.
