Howard was predeceased by his parents, James & Pauline Giroux; brothers, 2 in infancy, Allan and Joseph, Jim, Phillip (Joan) and Edmund; sister, Bernice (Rudy Zerrie) and nieces & nephews, Glenna and Jeffery. Howard was born October 1, 1931 on his uncle’s farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. He was the second oldest in a family of ten children, five brothers and four sisters. He was raised in the Weyburn area and went to school at St. Joseph’s Academy in Forget. Howard struggled in school and once stated that he had only grade 3, part of grade 4 but could do grade 12 math. He learned quickly to work with his hands and would say “when the head doesn’t work, the hands have to.” When farm work needed to be done, Howard was pulled out of school to help with seeding, haying and harvest. In his early teens Howard’s father did custom combine work in the USA which meant that Howard did all the fieldwork at home and helped with the dairy. He worked hard every morning before he left for school, milking their 4 cows. At the young age of 16, Howard had a wheat book in his name and he left school to work fulltime on the family farm. As well as farming, Howard was his mother’s right hand maid. He changed his brothers and sisters diapers, helped with the laundry and feeding his younger siblings. One of the hired men on the Giroux farm had a few sisters, one named Lena. On Sunday afternoons many neighbours and friends met at Nickle Lake for an afternoon of fun. Two years later on November 3, 1955 Howard and Lena were married. Together they had three daughters, Christine in 1956, Josephine in 1959 and Karen in 1961. Together with his eldest brother they continued to farm and raise dairy cattle grew the dairy business together. In the spring of 1961 Howard and Lena bought their own homestead. Howard worked the land for 46 plus years and retired from active farming in 1994 and they would move into Weyburn into 2005. Howard and Lena enjoyed card parties, neighbourhood dances, get-togethers, bingo and going for coffee. They were married for 62 years, have three children, 9 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
