Grace was born on May 2nd 1933 to Lillian ( nee Holmes) and John Fell in Weyburn, Sask. the fifth child of a family of seven. She took her schooling in Weyburn till Grade 10 when she chose to go to work. She would talk about her first job at the Dixon Café and the fun she had with the friends she worked with.
She met her first husband Alvin Overland during this time and they married in 1955. Tragedy struck in 1956 and Grace was left widowed with two small children. In 1957 she married Arthur Braaten. Together they raised three children Donald, Colleen, and Maureen on a farm near Lintlaw, Sk. and shortly after in Weyburn. Trying to make a better life for her and “us kids” she worked many jobs, mostly in retail.
When dad retired she did as well, and spent a lot of time crafting, traveling and being with the Grandkids and just enjoying being together. She loved music and taught herself, with Alvin’s help, to play the guitar and accordion enough to enjoy fun get- togethers with family and friends. Listening to Scottish music made her smile, and mom always dreamed of going to Scotland to see where her dad was born and raised. She and dad loved having company and travelling, often with a tent or trailer in tow to visit family and friends on summer vacations.
Grace loved to dance with Arthur as he was usually up first on the dance floor. Grace loved taking pictures and had many reels of slides and photo albums. She did her share of crafts over the span of her lifetime with quilting and crocheting being her faves.
Later in retirement she‘d paint the wooden projects dad made and take to flee markets to sell and socialize. Mom would make matrimonial cake to serve her guests and it was the best ever. Mom was always polite and kind to people, never wanting to hurt their feelings.
She struggled with mental health in her 60’s and later diagnosed with dementia. All her caregivers said she was a wonderful and happy person and easy to care for.
We would often hear “Gracie is one of my favorites.”
Marion Grace was predeceased by her husband Arthur Braaten, first husband Alvin Overland, her parents Lillian and John Fell, sisters Ethel Kuiper, Dorothy Lynch, brothers Jim Fell, Murray Fell, along with many aunts, uncles, nephews, a niece and many in-laws and their spouses, all of whom she had cherished in her heart.
