May Alice Mary Wright

2 November, 19213 October, 2019

May Alice Mary Wright (nee Worton) was born in Longdon, England on November 2, 1921 and passed away at Weyburn, Saskatchewan on October 3, 2019 at the age of 97 years.

May was predeceased by her husband, Leslie A. Wright; parents, John and Winifred Worton (Brown); father & mother in law, Ephriam and Zella Wright; brother, Reginald Worton; brothers in law, Melville, Leo, Ralph & Rodger and special sisters in law, Hanna, Alice & Laura as well as 6 nephews and 3 nieces.

May was born the oldest of two children. She grew up attending the theater, symphonies and ballet. At the age of 17 she apprenticed at a shop on 'High Street' in London. However not taking to the 'selling' side she did excel at bookkeeping. Later May would move to a publishing firm as a bookkeeper. When war broke out, she volunteered but was turned down as to young only to be conscripted a short time later into the Air Force as a clerk. During some leave and while getting lost she met Les, who took up the quest to marry her. Smitten by his ability to recite Robert Service poetry while doing dishes, she agreed to marry him. Shortly after he was sent to North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France and the Netherlands. On his return, he left for Canada, with May following by ship a few months later. This was followed by a train ride to Regina, and a sleigh ride to the farm near Francis. Les eventually took up buying grain for the Wheat Pool which lead to many small towns in southern Saskatchewan; and the adjustments of life from the big city to new cultures; eventually to retire in Weyburn. May was active in all the communities; from helping set up and run immunization clinics for children, to school boards, the Women's institute (Homemakers), to organizing libraries (she loved to read), election official, curling and someone who would take pen to paper until she had an answer.

May will be lovingly remembered by her son, Darcy Worton Wright;daughter in law, Denise Elaine Wright; grandson, Michael W. (Jennifer) Wright and their son, Nicholas O. Wright; granddaughter, Dyana Wright (Kyle Drummelsmith) and their son, Avery L. Drummelsmith & 1 on the way; grandson, Daryl L. (Alexandra) Wright and family, Gabriel A. and Harper E Wright; special niece, Rilla Dunn; numerous other nieces, nephews to 4 generations & on; many special friends, Doug McCall, Marg Kuhn, Joyce Kirby, Jan Thorne, Barb Hudson, Warren McCall (MLA), Glenna Dereau, Nadine Kennedy and her sisters, Ron and Cheryl Powell as well as her “2nd son” Maurice Chapman.

A Memorial Service will take place at a later date. Donations in memory of May can be made to the Royal Canadian Legion, Weyburn Branch #47 or to the Knox Presbyterian Church, Weyburn, SK.
