March 29, 1925 – October 28, 2022
Anna “Ann” LaDell Carey was the third of six children born to Patrick T. and Myrtle C. (Edwards) Carey.
Ann was born in Longmont, Colorado at her family home. Ann grew up surrounded by siblings, aunts, uncles and many cousins. She was a good student who excelled in mathematics and accounting. During her senior year at Longmont High School, she enrolled in a special training program which, upon graduation, opened the door for her to work as a teller at the First National Bank in Denver. Ann said that she rode the bus alone to Denver and walked along unknown streets to the boarding house where she began the next phase of her life.
While living in Denver, Ann met her future husband, Donald G. Bingman (native of Athens, Ohio), at a USO dance sponsored by Lowrey Air Field. Don served there in the U.S. Army Air Corps. They were married on August 31st, 1947 at the home of her parents in Longmont, Colorado. They spent their early marriage exploring the beautiful Colorado mountains with friends and saving money for their first house. While living in a small apartment in central Denver, Ann continued to work at the bank while Don worked at Montgomery Wards and finished his degree in Business Administration through the GI Bill, at the University of Denver.
When Don began work for Gates Rubber Company, they moved prior to the birth of their first child, to South Mead Street, in Denver. Two more little girls came home to that house with the beautiful rose garden. In September of 1959 they moved to a new home in Applewood where they raised their three daughters: Ronda, Gayla and Pamela (Pam). Ann anchored her family life using her very real skill, finding the “practical” solution to every challenge. She was tenacious and had a great sense of humor.
Ann would laugh about all of the carpools she participated in. During her daughters’ school years, they never attended the same schools - at the same time. She supported her children’s interests by taking them to many lessons and events, co-leading Blue Bird and Campfire Girl groups and participating in school events. Ann even handmade the mints for each girl’s wedding reception.
When the girls were out of high school, Ann and Don were transferred for work to Midland, Michigan for several years in the 1970s. They returned to live in Arvada after Don retired from Dow Chemical. He had accepted a job with Coors Brewing Company. They were so glad to be back in Colorado with friends and family. Ann also worked for the State of Colorado at the Arvada Driver’s License Office, served as a block volunteer for charity drives and served within the congregation at Arvada Methodist Church.
Ann was so pleased to have five grandsons and three great grand-children enter into her circle of love. She welcomed: Timothy, Matthew, Kyle, Marc and Bradley; spending quality time with each as they grew up in the warmth of her care and kindness. Later, great grandson Haiden, Milla and Lilah added to her treasures. Her greatest love was spending time with these special people!
Ann created beautiful things for her family. She was an accomplished seamstress, making clothing for her family and custom draperies for her home. She loved to knit, making lap robes to support local charity and matching sweaters for her grandsons. She and Don were very good ballroom dancers. Ann also took classes in mosaic tile and flower arrangement. She loved flowers; surrounding herself with both real flowers and many pictures of flowers. Ann cooked a lot of large Thanksgiving feasts for extended family and the bar-b-que grill was nearly always warm. She said although she didn’t like cooking, she really did love to read cookbooks.
Ann connected her family and friends; she spent time with family in Longmont and continued to attend her class reunions in Longmont each year until about 2010. She was grateful to be able to visit extended family in California and Ohio over the years. She and Don reunited with Dons childhood friends from Ohio nearly every year. Ann and Don were fortunate to be able to travel to Europe, have several wonderful cruises, take their entire family to Disney World in 2005, drive across the US many times visiting friends and family. They flew each February during their retirement years to a beloved condo community called Nohonani, at the edge of the sea, on the island of Maui, Hawaii.
Ann and Don were welcomed to both the Meridian retirement community in Lakewood and to Ralston Creek Neighborhood in Arvada over the past 10 years. They were grateful for their wonderful caregiving family and for the many friends they met there.
Surviving Ann are her children; Ronda (Carl) Givan, Gayla (Ted) Sturbaum, Pam (Norm) Erthal; grandchildren Tim (Lynn) Givan, Matt Sturbaum, Kyle Sturbaum, Brad (Jacquelyn) Erthal, and great-grandchildren as above; nieces Ann Marie and Leslie and nephews Lee and Gary.
Preceding Ann in death are her parents, Patrick and Myrtle Carey, husband Donald Bingman, grandson Marc Givan; brothers Patrick Carey (died in infancy), Alan Carey and wife Doris, Lee Carey, wife Helen and niece Vivian; sisters Jean Carey Schreiner, husband John and nephew Kirk, and Norma Carey Polos, husband Pete and niece Cressy; sister-in-law Mary Virginia Bingman Horn and husband Robert Horn, brother-in-law Robert Bingman.
