David Allen Martinez, 61, of Denver Colorado, passed on Saturday November 29. He is survived by his petite flower of a wife Ruby Jimenez 65, and his beautiful-hard-working-solider daughter Alejandra 29, and son in law Alexander Rufener 28. He is survived by his loving mother Berla, his sisters Denise, Paula, and Brother Gary. He was proceeded in death by his sisters Michelle, and Teresa, his nephew Angelo, his father David Marquez, and the handsomest little nephew JJ. Dave loved many people including his little buckwheat-boy Amado, and his little Sasquatch niece Savannah.
Dave had a true servants mentality and heart. We can honestly say no one has a bad memory of him. He worked tirelessly at the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, the Church he loved, for the last 15 years. He grew to love the characters on Colfax and they loved him back. He spent mornings with his homies, on the sandwich line talking Broncos and Nuggets and making each one of them feel like they had dignity and they were worth while.
Dave opened the Cathedral and provided Security for weekday morning Mass; he served thousands of People of the Streets in the Breakfast Sandwich Line; he prepared all the food at the Rectory; he kept the Food Pantry stocked; he provided protein Snacks for his People at 4pm on the corner of Colfax and Logan; he prepared a hot dish at the weekly Friday Night at the Movies providing perhaps the only hot meal some had that day; he provided the Hors' D'oeuvres for the Sunday Concerts with performers from around the World; and Ruby and Dave provided the waffles and toppings at 12:30am for the New Year's Waffles, Champagne and Light Jazz for hundreds of Young Adults!
His kind presence made him a memorable person to everyone he interacted with. He lived long enough to see a Denver Nuggets Championship, several Bronco Super Bowl wins, his daughter get married, and to find out he was going to be a grandpa, but not long enough to see Amado get a girlfriend. His humor was stand-up worthy and made everyone laugh. He liked to think of himself as the meanest, hardest working Mexican on Colfax.
We invite you to celebrate and honor the life he loved on Wednesday December 10 at the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. Viewing starts at 8:00am with Rosary and Mass to follow. He will be laid to rest at Riverside Cemetery 5201 Brighton blvd. Reception to follow after he is laid to rest at the Knights of Columbus Hall 1555 Grant St.
