Don Hitt, the youngest of eight children, was born in 1938 to Charles and Eula Hitt. He and his family lived in St. Louis, Missouri until the age of 13, when the family came to Denver by train, where they were met by Dr. and Mrs. Suerig, the pastor of Grace Memorial Church.
In 1960, Don met Arlene Afman. They were married at Grace Memorial on January 20, 1961, and spent 63 loving years together.
Shortly after their wedding, in October of 1961, Don was drafted into the United States Army where he served his country for six years. Upon his return, he continued to serve the United States as a postal worker for 30 years.
During his time in the Army through his tenure with the postal service, Don and Arlene had three children born to them: Crystal, Leslie, and Mark. They would later welcome seven grandchildren and subsequently three great grandchildren.
Don was an avid baseball enthusiast, and a devout fan of the Colorado Rockies. He loved baseball so much that he and some friends once traveled by bus to Florida in hopes of becoming a member of the Dodgers. He coached Little League baseball and often enjoyed playing in softball leagues.
Don remained active in the church by singing in the choir, teaching Sunday school, and leading the youth group. His passion for the Lord extended beyond church, and he volunteered with Christian organizations helping after disasters, providing necessities and toys to those who need it, and teaching God’s word.
During his retirement years, Don and Arlene loved to travel around the world. They went on multiple cruises, explored new countries, and drove all around the USA visiting friends and family. During this time, Don and Arlene also focused on their grandchildren, supporting them during important periods and events in their lives.
