Doris LaVene was born on September 29, 1928 in Edgewater, Colorado, to Charles and Esther (Nilsson) Johnson. She was the youngest of eleven children, all of whom, would they be alive today, would probably say that she was the most spoiled of the bunch. Shortly after her arrival into such a large family, the neighbor kids saw infant clothes hanging on the line and asked her siblings, "Did your mom have another baby?" The answer was "No. Those are doll clothes."
Doris attended Edgewater High School and graduated in 1946. In May of 1950, Doris eloped with Raymond Holmes to Raton, New Mexico, where they were married. They made their home in Denver and had two sons, Chris and Randy. They moved to California in 1957, and lived in Pasadena and Fresno, before moving back to Denver in 1972. In November of 2020, she moved with her son and daughter-in-law to Pueblo West.
Doris worked as a florist and as a childcare provider. She was a self-taught artist and loved painting in oils on canvas. She was a shop-a-holic, and loved to antique and thrift shop with her sisters, Florence and Ellen. After shopping, they enjoyed a burger, fries, and milkshake. She loved country music, horse riding, strumming her guitar and singing, albeit off key.
She is survived by her son, Chris (Carol) grandson Chris (Christine) and great-grandson, Oliver, and by her sister, Florence.
She was preceded in death by her husband (March, 1974), son Randy Kelly (May, 1960), six sisters and three brothers.
At Doris's request, no funeral will be held.
