He was an only child. Hawkeye served in the U.S. Navy as a Motor Machinist’s Mate Third Class during World War II aboard the Razorback, a submarine in the “Silent Service” from May, 1943 to February, 1946. After he got out of the Navy he went to work for the Colorado and Southern Railroad as a switchman for the next 40 years. Hawkeye’s passion when he retired was gardening and a love for animals. We will always remember him tending to his geese, and taking care of the tomatoes. Most of all we will remember his kind and gentle heart and wonderful sense of humor.
He was preceded in death by his son Bill Hawkins and his step-daughter Mary Ellen Witsel.
He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Mary; daughter, Etta Worden, and step-daughter Sherry Krueger. He had six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
