Peg lived with her seven siblings on the family ranch near the Middle Loup River outside of Mullen, Nebraska. Peg attended country school and graduated from Mullen High School in 1938. After high school, Peg taught country school where she lived with a family and rode a horse to get to school.
Peg moved to Lincoln, Nebraska where she attended college and worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. She traveled by train to New York City, Denver and the West Coast with friends while working for the railroad.
In 1950, Peg met Rod Garner and they were married in Omaha, Nebraska in 1951. Peg and Rod became the proud parents of Geoff and Diane. They lived in Omaha until 1955 when they moved to Kansas City where Peg cared for the kids and worked at the library and then the Mission Press. The family moved to Colorado in 1966 to pursue Rod’s dream of being an entrepreneur. The entire family worked at our donut shop until Rod decided to return to his power tool sales career. It was an adventure for the family and many memories were made then!
Peg began working at Gates and Sons Forming as a bookkeeper and later became the Credit Manager. As Credit Manager, Peg became a member of the National Association of Credit Managers and Credit Women’s organizations. She served a President of the Credit Women’s group and made numerous long lasting friendships that exist to this day. Peg and Rod traveled to meetings with the Credit Managers organizations.
After Rod’s death in 1985, Peg worked for a few more years and then retired. She became very busy with her church, travel, volunteering, bridge, gardening and grandchildren. Peg discovered OASIS, an international tutoring organization. Through this program, Peg tutored reading to 2nd graders at Stober Elementary School. She enjoyed her pupils and volunteered for over 10 years. Peg loved being outside in her yard. She was very good at growing flowers – especially roses and iris. Many people will remember driving past the Garner home on Eldridge and seeing Peg working in the yard. Most stopped to visit – something that Peg loved.
Peg continued to live in and care for her home until March of 2013 when her Parkinson’s disease made it difficult to live in her home any longer. She moved to the Lakewood Meridian Health Center where she took up bingo and wheelchair bowling (she usually finished in the top third). Peg was always busy and received many visitors while making new friends at the Meridian. Many wonderful memories were made and Peg received the best of care from the caring and loving staff.
Her parents, Nels and Marguerite, precede Peg in death; husband Rod, siblings Bob, Lois, Jim, Jack, Tom and Jean.
Surviving family members include her children: Geoff and Annette Garner, Diane and Bill Kellogg, grandchildren: David and wife Sarah, Brandon, Kristie and husband Bob, Tyler and Rebecca all of Denver Colorado, Peg’s brother: Donn and Judy Simonson of Fullerton, Nebraska, many nieces and nephews and a large group of friends.
Peg’s kind, loving spirit and wonderful sense of humor will be missed by everyone she touched in this life.
A memorial service will be held at 4:00 on July 14th at St. John Chrysostom Episcopal Church, 13151 W. 28th Avenue, Golden, Co. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Davis Phinney Foundation for Parkinsons - davisphinneyfoundation.org.
