Marie Chisholm

Long time Fairplay resident Marie Chisholm passed away peacefully in her families’ home in Arvada at the age of 91 on December 21, 2021. Born on December 7, 1930 in Grady New Mexico, where she lived on the family farm with her grandparents. She moved to Albuquerque, NM with her mother and lived in many other locations in New Mexico until moving to Fairplay Colorado in 1949. When her mother went back to NM, Marie, at the age of 14, stayed in Fairplay where she attended school from the 8th grade until she graduated from Fairplay High School in 1949. She lived in Fairplay for the next 70 years until the altitude forced her to move to Arvada CO.

While attending high school she met her sweetheart and, after getting permission from the principle to get married, she married Don Chisholm in June 1948 and finished her high school education as Mrs. Chisholm.

During her life in Fairplay she worked various jobs to support herself and her family, waitress, town clerk office, Social Services, and finally the Colorado Extension office from 1961 until she retired in 1976.

During retirement she traveled a bunch, from the artic to Antarctica and many points in between. Between trips she became a professional volunteer doing many things for the communities of Park County which she loved. She keep quite busy helping seniors in their home, giving rides to the store , doctor appointments, teaching sewing, working with the cattlemen’s association or writing grants to get money for the Senior Center, sidewalks in Fairplay and Alma, pedestrian bridge over the river and other infrastructure improvements. Whatever she did she jumped with both feet and went full speed head. She held offices on Fairplay Sanitation Board, South Park Senior Coalition, Chamber of Commerce, Park County 4H, CUSP and represented the Town of Alma on Central Front Range Planning Committee for CDOT.

Marie was an active member of the Rebekah Lodge throughout her adult life and was proud of the work they did and the scholarships they were able to give to deserving students.

Marie is preceded in death by her husband Donald Chisholm and is survived by her sons Kenneth (Terri) and Keith (Pamela), grandchildren, Jim, Jayme (Manjola) Doremus, Kyle and Amanda Chisholm and great-grandchildren Ayden Chisholm, Loren, Isaiah, Tobias and Sophia Doremus.
