The angel who was sent from heaven on March 12, 1927 was named Nettie Mae Weaver. She was born in McBean, Georgia, one of 12 children of Allen and Miner Weaver. As the first girl born after 4 boys, she was tasked with some special responsibilities: she learned how to drive by age 12, so she could help her brothers, who were working in the fields. She was also the one that her Papa preferred to skin all of the game he and the boys hunted – “nobody could do it like Nettie Mae!” Though she was only able to go to school through the 6th grade, she never lost her passion for education – a passion she fostered in all her children.
Her rural life changed when she met the love of her life, John Thomas (Tom) Jones, Sr. They married in 1944 after a courtship that consisted of 2 years of letter writing, and a request to her Papa for her hand in marriage. Never had one date! They were married for 61 years until his death in 2005.
In 1944, they moved to Turner Station, Maryland and raised their 5 children. Nettie was an extraordinary homemaker, keeping their tiny, modest row home beautiful at all times. She sewed clothes for her children, canned foods to help make ends meet, and anchored the family in love and a close relationship with God that guided her every step. Nettie was a beloved and faithful member/usher at St. Matthews UMC, where she served for over 30 years.
In 1974, Nettie and Tom successfully completed the work needed to obtain their G.E.D.s. Then, not satisfied to stop there, she studied at Dundalk Community College, receiving her Associate of Arts Degree, at the age of 50, in 1977! Nettie was so proud to be a mother and wife, but out of necessity, she took on odd jobs whenever she could. She worked in janitorial services, laundry work, restaurant factory services; once she obtained her higher education degrees, she was a skilled teacher’s assistant at Turner’s elementary school working with special education children. She loved “her kids” and they loved her.
Her most cherished role was her appointment as a Deaconess at Shorter Community African Methodist Episcopal Church. She was ordained in 2011 and served faithfully as Mother Jones until her death. She was a praying, loving, worshipping servant. Her beautiful gray Deaconess uniforms were fancy and joyful! She loved God and she loved her church family!!
She was a vibrant, active, fun lady and she brightened the lives of every single person she ever met! Nettie was never judgmental. She honored and cared for her family and friends; letting them all know how important they were to her. She was as kind as she was beautiful.
On May 14, 2025, “Mom”/ “Nana”/ “Aunt Nettie”/ “Mother Jones”/Nettie answered God’s call to come home. She will always be remembered for her grace, faith, and the love she showered on all of us. She is reunited with her angel, Tom in that heavenly village.
Nettie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John (“Tom”), her siblings: Bishop, Primus, Essex, Bill, Addie, Mary, Edward, Allen, John, Elsie.
Nettie leaves to cherish her memory her dear sister, Marie; her five children: Gloria(Grover), John (Shirley), Harold, Debra(Richard), David(Gwen); eleven grandchildren: John III, Gregory(Val), Jennifer(Ironzey), Valerie, Shawana, Tarẽ, Samantha(Garrett), Alan(Lavonne), Jordan, Sydney, Cicely(Jacob); fourteen great-grandchildren; scores of nephews, nieces, and beloved friends.
