Bob Pounders, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather passed away at the age of 93 on March 18, 2020 in Colorado Springs, CO. He was born in Birmingham Alabama to Robert F. Pounders and Olive (Bridges) Pounders. His siblings were Arlie Pounders, Edna Walsh, Eva Vaughan, Archie Pounders, and Joe Pounders.
Bob spent his youth in the town of Clay Alabama helping with the family farm and working at a nearby grocery store to help support the family during the depression years.
He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1943 at the age of 16. Of course, he told the Marine Corps he was 17 at the time. His tour of duty was spent in the Battles of Roi-Namur, Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima with the 4th Marine Division.
After his discharge in 1945, he went back to Birmingham to finish his high school education where he met and married his beautiful wife Emogene (Henry) Pounders. They spent 71 years together and had 5 children. When their first son developed asthma, they moved the family to Colorado. They also spent several years in Idaho but eventually set root in Colorado.
Bob spent most of his career as a Type Setter at a local print shop, Egan Printing Co. He took great pride in his work and took great care to ensure the finished content was accurate and correct. He was secretary of the Allied Printers Assoc. for several years. During the early years of his career he took on additional part time jobs in order to provide for his growing family. Working seven days a week was the norm for many years.
He was a self-educated and very resourceful person. No matter what the project, plumbing, electrical, auto repair, carpentry, etc. he did it all himself. If he didn’t know how to do something, he would get a book or magazine on the subject and teach himself. He had a huge collection of Popular Mechanics. He built numerous cabinets, dressers, and headboards. And he never let anything go to waste. He was re-purposing way before it became popular.
In 1975 he and Jean purchased 5 acres in Florissant CO and decided to build a little cabin on the land. They settled on an A-frame style. He made numerous changes to the plans to include an additional room to allow for a larger kitchen, added a bathroom to the loft, and added a finished basement. The little cabin became their forever home.
Bob loved spending time with his family, camping, fishing, hunting, gardening, reading, and sharing stories of his childhood and eventually, he shared stories of his time in the military. He was very proud to be a Marine!
Bob is survived by his wife of 71 years Emogene, son Don (Jamie), daughter Peggy (David-deceased), son Gary (Cindy), daughter Cathy (Tom). Son Ed preceded him in death. Grand children include Robyn (John), Brian (Chanel), Daniel (Julie), Todd (Jamie), Aaron (Jamie), Stephany (Paul), Tony (Christina), Dave (Amanda), Nicholas(deceased), and Ryan (Alex).
