Russ went to be with his Lord and Savior May 23rd, 2022, at the age of 98. He died peacefully in his sleep at his residence in Aurora, Colorado due to complications from COVID.
Russ was born October 25, 1923, in Denver, Colorado. At the age of 8, he and his two brothers were placed in Clayton College, a home for fatherless boys where he lived until graduating from Manual High School in 1941. Upon graduation he worked for AT&T Long Lines as a cable splicer and then enlisted in the US Army on December 7, 1942 and served in the Army Air Corp in England where he served until his discharge on January 29, 1946.
Russ married G. Jean Christiansen on September 3, 1946, at Beth Eden Baptist Church in Denver and the two were blessed with two children Russ and CJ. Russ and Jean moved the family to Wheat Ridge in 1951 and remained happily married for 61 years until her death on March 21, 2007. Russ worked as a design engineer for the Colorado Department of Transportation for forty years during which time he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering from the University of Colorado in 1972. While he loved his family and his work, Russ loved the Lord the most and found himself in service as a longtime member of Applewood Baptist Church in Wheat Ridge. He served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher at the church and after retiring from CDOT spent his time volunteering on various boards and committees related to public employees. Russ also found great joy in sharing the Good Word with residents at nursing homes who were unable to attend services at a church.
Russ was preceded in death by his wife Jean, parents Russell P. Mayer and Erma Mathews Mayer, and bothers Stan and Earl. Survivors include son Russ Mayer and his wife Justine of Greeley, Colorado and daughter CJ Griffin and her husband Richard of Aurora, Colorado. Russ is also survived by three grandchildren Gayla Mayer Lattimer and husband Steve of Greeley, Gavin Mayer of Ithaca, New York, Heather Griffin of Aurora, two great-grandchildren Connor Lattimer and Macy Lattimer both of Greeley and sister-in-law Beverly Mayer as well as several nieces and nephews and their families.
Celebration of Life Service will be at 10 AM June 3, 2022, at Olinger Crown Hill Mortuary & Cemetery, 7777 W. 29th Ave. in Wheatridge, Colorado. His final resting place will be with his wife at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver.
