Sara Jane Duerst (Black) was born June 11, 1931, in Colorado Springs, CO. Sara passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on September 23, 2022, at the beautiful age of 91. She is proceeded in death by her loving husbands Harvey Albert Duerst, Don Ward, Bill Black, her son Mark Duerst, and stepdaughter DeeDee Patterson
One of the highlights of her life was being sealed for time and all eternity to her husband Harvey and their four sons David, Daniel, Mark and Paul. She lost her sweet Harvey in 1964, this was a huge loss for her, but she was a very strong and determined woman and raised her boys and did the very best she could. Sara served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, in the family history department and the missionary department. She was a very faithful minister to those in need and always shared her beautiful smile which would brighten every one’s day.
Sara obtained a teaching degree from the University of Colorado, and a master’s degree in special education from Adams State University. Sara taught for many years special education, and loved being a teacher. The last years of her career was spent as a substitute teacher which she thoroughly enjoyed. She was passionate about her teaching and helping children with special needs. Sara’s life was about serving and loving everyone she met.
Sara is survived by her sons David (Diane), Daniel, Paul (Janet), her stepchildren Teresa Powell, and Bill Black Jr whom she loved dearly. She is also survived by 28 grandchildren, 46 great grandchildren, and 6 great-great grandchildren, and many more to come.
Sara left a legacy in her family and community. She lived a health driven life, sharing her knowledge with others, and continuously striving to learn more. She was often found humming through life’s chores and moments. She will be missed and always loved by the many lives she touched. We find peace in knowledge that Sara has been reunited with all her family members who have passed on before us and what a great reunion she is having.
