Stephen Gerald Small was born in Denver, Colorado on December 11, 1944, to Ernest Virgil and Billie Louise Small. On August 16, 2025, at the age of 80, Steve met Jesus face to face in Lakewood, Colorado.
Steve grew up in south Denver as the 2nd of 6 siblings. While he often shared memories of ornery antics with his brothers, it was clear that he learned the value of hard work and family. Exploring our beautiful state of Colorado and fishing anywhere they could find a good hole was what the boys lived for. He attended Rosedale Elementary, Grant Junior High and South High School. However, as attending school was not his favorite activity, he opted to get his GED.
Steve was married at the young age of 17 and welcomed two daughters, Valerie and Cindi, in the following four years. With a family to provide for, he was excused from the Vietnam draft and worked with his dad as a carpenter/laborer in the construction field. When his father passed away, Steve secured a position with Gates Rubber Company washing windows. He was promoted to a messenger and eventually a laboratory technician where he would test and operate high speed equipment inspecting and ensuring quality of products. During this time he decided to further his education at the Emily Griffith school as well as Metropolitan State College.
In 1977 he married Ginny, the love of his life. In the following years, they would welcome two children, Stephen and Katy. They purchased and sold several rental properties over the years including their 20 year long labor of love, Big Spruce Cabins in Idaho Springs.
Steve also built a long career with the United States Postal Service, where he faithfully served for 30 years. Never one to sit still, Steve enjoyed his “retirement years” attending his grandkids sporting events, working on his properties, and spending time as much time fishing as possible.
Steve’s greatest joy came from his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Ginny; his children Valerie (Bruce), Cindi (Chris), Stephen (Lindsay), and Katy(Ryan); nine grandchildren, Sean, Clayton, Stephen, Chloe, Sarah (Joe), Tatum, Lily, Logan and EllaRae; and one great-grandchild, Vincent. While he now celebrates in heaven with his parents and brothers Dan and Carl, he leaves behind 3 siblings; Phill (Karen), Patricia (Lee), and Doug, in addition to many nieces, nephews, and their families who will miss him dearly.
A a Celebration of Life for Stephen will be held Saturday, October 4, 2025 at 11:00 am Living Waters Tabernacle, 1701 S. Sherman St., Denver, CO 80210.
