Velma A. Richards, age 99, passed away on April 12, 2017. She was born in Ord, Nebraska on November 6, 1917. Velma was raised on a farm and received her BA in Chemistry and Biology in 1944 and a Masters Degree in Elementary Education and Ecology in 1977. She spent her career as a Chemist, Teacher, and Science Technician. She also volunteered for 40 years at the Denver Botanic Gardens, contributed articles to the Colorado Native Plant Society, and was a member of the Littleton Gem and Mineral Club.
Velma was married for 53 years to Harlan Richards and raised 5 children. Harlan and Velma were founding members of Centennial Lutheran Church where Velma sang in the choir for many decades.
She is survived by her 5 children: Jim Richards, Cindi Toepel, David Richards, Tim Richards, Lars Richards, 8 grandchildren: JT Toepel, Kari Toepel, Tori Richards, Julia Richards, Rae Richards, Luke Richards, Edger Guevara, Christian Guevara and 4 great grandchildren: Maddie Scott, Harlan Hansen, MacKenzie Hansen, and Mariana Guevara. She was preceded in death by her husband Harlan Richards, her granddaughter Nicole Toepel, and her grandson Ben Richards. She had a great joy for nature and learning; she will be missed by all.
