Gilbert Allen Bergsrud

Gilbert Allen Bergsrud, age 88, of West Bloomfield, Michigan, passed away peacefully on February 21st, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born on July 16, 1936, in Spring Grove, Minnesota, Gilbert was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend who brought joy, warmth, and positivity to everyone he met. A man of deep faith, he was a devoted follower of Christ Lutheran Church for 65 years and cherished his Church Family with his late Wife and kids.

Gilbert was the beloved husband of his late wife Rita Bergsrud and a proud father to his late daughter Andrea Schnitzer and son Eric (Michele) Bergsrud. He was a cherished grandfather to Emilia (Jinxy) Schnitzer and Jacen Schnitzer. He was the son of the late Morris and Evelyn Bergsrud and the beloved brother of the late Dorothy Mathais, Annabelle Erickson, and the late Robert Bergsrud. He was also a dear uncle to many.

A passionate teacher, Gilbert moved to Michigan right out of college and began his teaching career at the age of 23 in the Waterford School District. He and his wife Rita were both long time teachers in the district, both retiring after many years of service. He was a debate coach for his high school Waterford Township, the head of the Drama Club at Kettering High School, he also served on many boards with different organizations, such as the Michigan Education Association, He was a past President of his local Sons of Norway Organization. When not working, he found immense joy in spending time with his loved ones, coaching his kids in many activities, golfing, cross country skiing, traveling to Minnesota visiting loved ones, watching sports, and being very active with his Church Family including decades as a member of their Choir. His zest for life and unwavering dedication to those he cared for will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.

There will be a memorial service at 11:00 am on Thursday, March 6, 2025 at Christ Lutheran Church in Waterford (5987 Williams Lake Rd., Waterford, Mi. 48329). A luncheon will follow at the Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Christ Lutheran Church for the Parking Lot Fund in his honor.

Gilbert’s warmth, thoughtfulness, kindness, and love will be deeply missed but forever cherished in the hearts of his family and friends.
