Born on May 5, 1949, in Detroit, Michigan, James was the son of George and Gertrude Harter. He lived a life marked by quiet strength, dedication to his family, and a deep sense of service to his country.
James proudly served in the United States Navy, achieving the rank of Commander of Naval Forces. His military career reflected his commitment, discipline, and patriotism, values he carried with him throughout his life.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Sue; his children Ronnie Harter, Rebecca Harter, Shelly Davey, James Harter Jr., and Gretchen Harter. He is also survived by his sisters, Gloria and Pam, and his brother, Duane, along with many extended family members who will miss him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Gertrude Harter; his brothers, Jerry and David; and his sister, Sandy.
James will be remembered as someone who was often quiet at first, but once engaged (especially on a topic he cared about) he had a way of bringing humor and personality into every conversation. His family will always cherish the simple, meaningful moments they shared with him: watching Survivor together every Wednesday, enjoying Live PD on the weekends, and traveling to Cocoa Beach, where he loved strolling through the resort, taking in the sights, and enjoying the lazy river and water slides.
In his free time, James found joy in life’s everyday routines. He enjoyed watching television, keeping cars clean, and browsing for the occasional unexpected purchase on Amazon.
Above all, he was a devoted husband, father, brother, and friend whose presence brought comfort, laughter, and steadiness to those around him.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to your local VFW Post in honor of James’s service.
In accordance with his wishes, James will be laid to rest at Great Lakes National Cemetery, 4200 Belford Rd, Holly, MI 48442.
