Robert was born on September 7, 1932, in St. Charles, VA, to proud parents Green and Perdie Phillips. From a young age, Robert displayed a passion football, which he pursued throughout his school years.
In 1951, Robert married the love of his life, Stella Phillips, and together they shared nearly five decades of cherished memories until her passing in 1999.
With a strong work ethic and dedication, Robert spent 25 years of his career with the Oakland County Road Commission, where he served with pride and integrity. Prior to this, he had also worked in the automotive industry.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Robert had a knack for woodworking and could often be found whittling wooden creations, particularly slingshots. He cherished his roots in Pocket, VA, and delighted in the moments he could return to his hometown.
Robert found joy in the simple pleasures of life, whether it was taking leisurely walks, rocking in his chair, or riding his bike. As he grew older, he transitioned to an indoor exercise bike, continuing to embrace his love for cycling. He also enjoyed cruising around on his lawn mower and golf cart, savoring the freedom of the open air.
Robert had a soft spot for his grandchildren, frequently treating them to ice cream from the neighborhood truck. He had a routine of starting his day with chewing tobacco and watching "The Andy Griffith Show," finding comfort in its familiar scenes.
Robert is preceded in death by his parents, Green and Perdie Phillips, his wife Stella, his brothers Ed and Ralph Phillips, sisters Helen Bowling and Nada Shelby, as well as his daughter Robbie Phillips and son-in-law Danny James.
He is survived by his children Helen Sue (Larry) Faber, Iris V Hammerstrom, Tina R (Wendell) Steitzer, Gidget M James, and Robert O. Phillips Jr.; grandchildren Heath, Marcus, and Rusty Faber, Jesse, Jestine, and Levi Taulbee, Fawn, Stephanie, and Thor Hammerstrom, Willow (Zach) Hiscock, Destiny James, Skyler (Kendra) James, and Drift James; as well as his 12 great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, May 25, 2024 at the Union Lake Chapel of the Elton Black and Son Funeral Home, 1233 Union Lake Rd., White Lake, MI 48386. Visitation will be on Friday, May 24, 2024 from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Burial will be in Commerce Memorial Cemetery.
Robert Walter Phillips leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories. He will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing him. May he rest in eternal peace.
