Philip Smith passed away the evening of January 22, 2020 from complications of lung cancer. He is survived by his children, Dr. Christopher Smith and Stephanie Barr, four grandchildren, his brother, Alfred Smith, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He also had a deep connection with many members of the Ponca Tribe, his adopted family.
Philip had a creative mind, a love for art and a passion for storytelling. He loved connecting with people through humor and by sharing his observations and insights about the world.
While his professional life was spent in sales in the technology and financial services industries, in retirement he chose to express himself by working with his hands. He enjoyed carpentry, woodworking – and really any kind of work that didn’t involve sitting behind a desk. He was able to appreciate the simple artistry of building a bridge, as well being a part of the production process of the beautiful sculptures that his Ponca brother, SaSu Weh masterfully crafted.
He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to support the Wa HoN Thing Ga organization, Ponca Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma, Secretary/ Treasury, Box 2 White Eagle Drive, Ponca City, OK 74601.
