An easy-going, likeable guy with a great sense of humour, Dave never took life too seriously and lived it his way. You could always find him puttering in the backyard; helping and sharing a laugh with a neighbour; golfing; travelling or spending time at his “happy place”- the family cottage.
Dave loved a challenge and always put his “MacGyver” skills to work rehabilitating an old melted hand mixer or repurposing old materials in unorthodox ways. His endeavours weren’t always pretty and sometimes drove his children nuts, but that's probably why he took so much joy in it.
Dave’s great passion for photography and editing, led him to partnering with his brother Wally to open the Hayes Shutterbug shops, focusing on camera sales and photography development. He also had a successful 32-year career with CBC Television. He was a dedicated and talented production editor who worked on documentaries, news and public affairs stories for CBC Halifax evening news and CBC Newsworld. Some of his most notable works included, Coast of Dreams and Expo 67, earned him several letters of recognition from superiors and colleagues. He was highly respected by his co-workers who found him “a heck of a lot of fun to work with.”
Dave’s greatest achievement and source of pride was his family. Being a loving and dependable husband, father, and grandfather was of utmost importance to him. Everything he did revolved around his family. From annual family trips to Florida; swim meets and soccer games with his daughters; to dance recitals and Teddy Bear picnics with his granddaughters, his family always knew they were his top priority.
Dave was pre-deceased by his parents, the late Roy and Florence (Bond) Hayes. Besides his wife Betty, he is survived by daughters Stephanie, Karen DeMings (Dale), granddaughters Sydney & Ashley;
brothers Wally (Joyce) & Brian (Christine) and several nieces and nephews.
Due to Covid 19, there will not be a visitation or funeral. A private interment will be held at a later date.
The family would sincerely like to thank the Doctors, Nurses and Staff of Floor 8.4 (Halifax Infirmary) and Floor 7A (Palliative Care-VG Hospital) for the amazing care and attention they provided.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Heart & Stroke Foundation.
Dave, we love you and will carry you in our hearts forever until we meet again.
