Philip was born on April 21, 1954 in Indianapolis, IN at Methodist Hospital to parents Richard and Ione Wintin. He served honorably for 18 years in the United States Air Force as a military police officer and was stationed around the world in Germany, The United Kingdom and Texas. On July 20, 1985, he married Cynthia Ann Riney. They raised twin sons, Mackenzie and Zachary.
Following a career as a corrections officer in Palestine, TX, Philip went on to earn his Bachelor of Science degree in History at the University of Texas-Tyler in 2009 at the age of 56. He worked as a test administrator at Irving ISD before retiring in 2016.
Having a passion for history, travel and music, Philip dominated family game nights playing countless rounds of Jeopardy. An avid music lover, Phil loved The Beatles, Elton John and all genres of classic rock ‘n roll. Philip’s greatest passion, however, was his love of dogs. Together with wife Cynthia, they rescued numerous dogs from shelters and foster care and gave each of them loving forever homes.
Philip was preceded in death by his father, Richard Morris Wintin, mother Ione Louise Schlueter Wintin, brother Richard “Dickie” Wintin Jr., sister Kriss Wintin Kennedy, and nephew Richard George Boersig. Philip is survived by his wife Cynthia Wintin of Irving, TX, son Mackenzie Wintin and wife Mallory Wintin of Carrollton, TX , son Zachary Wintin of Carrollton, TX, sister Toni Boersig and husband Joe Boersig of Albuquerque, NM, sister Michaelynn Hawkins and husband Dennis Hawkins of Bedford, TX, sister Anne Coleman and husband Bill Coleman of Rockledge, FL, and sister Suzan Stowe and husband Neal Stowe of Gig Harbor, WA. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins, as well as his beloved best friend and dog, Milton.
His family would like to extend their sincere thanks and gratitude to Dr. Perkins and the entire Oncology team at Baylor Scott & White of Irving, TX for helping dad fight cancer over the past four years.
A memorial for Philip will be held at a later date, to be determined by family. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate a donation to the SPCA of Texas or The Democratic National Committee in Philip’s name.
