Lewis Card, Sr., a carpet industry pioneer and inventor, passed away Monday September 11 at the age of 96. Lewis, known affectionately to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren as Ada, was a genuine member of the Greatest Generation. He has passed on to his family a rich heritage of ingenuity, generosity and family loyalty.
Lewis Card was a carpet industry inventor and entrepreneur who began his career at his uncle Joe Cobble’s company, Cobble Brothers Machinery Company. He later sold Cobble to The Singer Company. He went on to found several companies in the tufting industry, including one he took public on the American Stock Exchange. Lewis ended his career at Card-Monroe Corp. He had over 150 patents in his name and his last one granted at the age of 95. In 2010 Lewis, along with his brother, and lifelong business partner, Roy Card, were inducted into the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga School of Business Entrepreneurship Hall of Fame. For more than 60 years Lewis and Roy Card were partners in the carpet industry’s innovation and development.
Lewis was a resident of both Chattanooga, TN and Panama City Beach, FL. He served on the boards of CARTA and SunTrust Bank Chattanooga. He was a generous supporter of Baylor School, the Bright School and the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga. He was a member of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church for over fifty years. He was a member of Alhambra Shriners. After a long, blessed life, Lewis went to his Heavenly Father.
He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Rocelia Card, brother Roy T. (Virginia) Card, his children, Lamar Card, Janice (Danny) Henderson, Lewis (Becky) Card, Jr. and Kimberly (Ken) Kelly, grandchildren, Lewis Card (Laura) Steele, Danielle (Tony) Pickett, Bradford (Brittnee) Henderson, Katherine (Ryan) Berube, Joseph Lewis (Laura) Card, III, Camille Henderson, Nathanial (Starr) Card, Joseph Card, Baylor Mosier, and great-grandchildren, Carson and Weber “Senator” Steele, Logan and Landon Pickett, Will Henderson, Faith and Grace Millholland, Logan Wheland, Maxwell and Kate Berube, Josephine and Charles Card, Morgan Wynn, Baker and Annabelle Zink.
A celebration of life will be at Noon on Friday September 15th at First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 1505 N. Moore Rd. Chattanooga, TN 37411, followed by a visitation from 2:30 to 4:00 PM at the Chattanooga Golf and Country Club, 1511 Riverview Rd. Chattanooga, TN 37405.
