Forrest Eugene “Dinky” Wheeler, 84, a resident of Verona, passed away at his home on Monday, November 8, 2010. He was born on January 17, 1926 in Augusta County and was the son of the late Edward Blair and Jessie Frances Tanner Wheeler. Dinky lived his entire life in the Augusta County area and graduated from Mt. Sidney High School. He served in the US Navy during WWII and was employed with Westinghouse, then McQuay, for 35 years, he retired in 1983. He was a member of Laurel Hill Baptist Church and was an avid camper and fisherman and enjoyed hunting. On August 14, 1948, he married Frances Wagner, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Donald W. Wheeler of Verona, Dennis E. Wheeler, Sr. and wife, Shirley of Swoope, a daughter, Tammie Wells and husband, Matt of Churchville, former daughter-in-law, Rhonda E. Wheeler of Newport News, seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two brothers, Charlie Wheeler and wife, Ruth Anne of Verona, Harvey Wheeler of Staunton, three sisters, Peg Saufley and Charlotte Bateman both of Staunton, and Martha Atkins of Verona, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sheila Marie Wheeler, a grandson, Dennis E. Wheeler, Jr. and brothers, Ralph, Jack, Walter, and Bill. The family will receive friends 7-9:00 PM, Wednesday, November 10, at Lindsey Funeral Home in Weyers Cave. A graveside service will be held 11:00 AM, Thursday, November 11, 2010 at Augusta Memorial Park with Rev. Rhonda E. Wheeler officiating.
