History

The establishment of the Vernon C Wagner Funeral Homes began in the coal mining region of Pennsylvania. When Vernon C. Wagner was a teenager, his classmate was killed in a motorcycle accident. The restoration job on his friend inspired Vernon to want to do a better job in the business of caregiving.

After serving in the Navy during World War II, Vernon went to American Academy McAllister Institute in New York City and became a licensed New York funeral director.

In 1954, he and his wife, Alice, purchased the big old white house on the corner of Old Country Road and Jerusalem Avenue in Hicksville. It was part of the estate of Dr. Shea, but for years it had been a rooming house. He opened for business in August of that year after consolidating with the Mowen Funeral Home, 1 of the 3 funeral homes in Hicksville.

A growing business

During the rest of the 1950s, there was more building and remodeling as the number of families coming to the Wagner Funeral Home increased beyond the limits of the original building. In 1963, Vernon enlarged part of the original building again. Through the 70s, the firm bought more land to increase the size of the parking lot.

In 1979, our 25th anniversary gave us a chance to look back at how our funeral home went from merely 15 funerals in the 1st year of business to well over 200 at that point.

Remodeling and renovations

At Vernon C. Wagner Funeral Homes, providing better service is always our first concern. So to meet the needs of the Hicksville community, we began a large extension and remodeled the entire building in the fall of 1984.

In the late '90s, we constructed a new handicap entrance ramp to make the transition into and out of the funeral home easier for the mobility impaired.

In 2005, we began a beautification project to update our interior facility and provide a warm and comfortable environment for the many families who visit our funeral home.

Today, we are proud to be a member of the Dignity Memorial^® network of funeral, cremation and cemetery service providers. With more than 60 years of service, we at Vernon C. Wagner Funeral Homes continue to uphold the traditions and standards set forth by our founder. Vernon endured the tragic loss of a friend and used that upsetting experience to build a career of providing outstanding funeral care.
