
Mary Theresa (Uthe) Wirth was born on June 22, 1933, to John and Elizabeth (Mott) Uthe of rural Boone, Iowa. She attended schools in Jordan, Sacred Heart in Boone, and Boxholm, Iowa. She graduated from Ames High School in 1951.
She attended Iowa State Teacher’s College (UNI) and went on to teach at the elementary schools in Colo and Gilbert.
On June 1, 1957, she married Vincent Wirth and together they farmed and raised their children northwest of Gilbert.
After Vince’s sudden passing, she moved to Ames and worked at the Ames Public Library at the circulation desk. She volunteered at the Mary Greeley Hospital and Food at First. She was a member of the St. Mary’s Circle at St. Cecelia’s in Ames.
Mary enjoyed reading, putting puzzles together and going for a drive. She would often organize family gatherings to play cards, eat, and enjoy conversation.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Vincent, her son-in-law Curt Abens, her brothers Paul, George and Robert and her sisters, Catherine Czizek and Rita Voss.
Mary is survived by her sons Kenny (Nancy) Wirth, Joe (Lori) Wirth of Gilbert and her daughters Suzanne Wirth of Gilbert and Jane Abens of West Des Moines; Her grandchildren, Michelle (Tom) Bunce, Matt Jackson, Daniel (Kendra) Wirth, Cole Wirth and Cody Wirth; and several great and great-great grandchildren; sister-in-law Kate Uthe of Boone; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Monday, March 16 from 5-7 pm at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames. Mass of Christian burial will be Tuesday, March 17 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Cecelia’s Catholic Church in Ames. Burial will be in Saints Peter and Paul’s Catholic Cemetery rural Gilbert.
Donations will be given to the Alternative Medicine and Music for PD lab at Iowa State (Parkinson’s research) and Suncrest Hospice Care Services.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Stevens Memorial Chapel, 607 28th Street, Ames, Iowa.
