

Robert, known to friends and family as Bob, was born in Ames, Iowa, on May 16th, 1953, to John Briggs Sheeler and Charlsee Avon Handy. He graduated from Ames Senior High School in 1971 and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Bob married Patti Guy on August 21, 1976 in Ames, Iowa (later divorced). Bob held the distinct honor of being a United States Marine. As a Marine, he was a member of both the USMC Rifle and Pistol Teams. He achieved the rare decoration and earned the title as a double distinguished marksman with the rifle and pistol. Following his honorable discharge in 1977, he attended Iowa State University, where he studied Industrial Engineering. Bob traveled the world working for UPS as an Industrial Engineer. Bob and Patti had four children together in Ames before relocating to Ankeny, Iowa.
Favorite pastimes of Bob's included: competitive shooting, billiards, chess, fishing, hunting, and playing the harmonica and guitar. He was intrigued by numbers, statistics, Atlas’, and anything involving strategy. As an avid fan, he followed the sports of golf, tennis, and NASCAR. Bob loved hearing stories about his grandchildren and was delighted to hear about the newest grandson (Simon), coming in August. He was interested in people from all walks of life and cherished laughter through stories with those close to him. He was always known for having an enormous sense of humor.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, John Briggs Sheeler and Charlsee Avon Handy; his Uncle Max Ivan Sheeler and Aunt Dorothy Ann Sheeler; and older brother John Robert Sheeler. He is survived by his children Benjamin (Megan) Sheeler of Eldridge, IA; Kate (Ricardo) Becerril of Ankeny, IA; Lindsey Sheeler of Ankeny, IA; and Lucas Sheeler of Ankeny, IA; his six grandchildren: Kiernan, Emma, Ethan, Carmen, Lily, and Simon; his loving stepmother Mary Irene Sheeler of Marshalltown, IA; and his siblings Daniel Sheeler of Ames, IA; Anne (Larry) Tiller of Marshalltown, IA; William (Jen) Sheeler of Stillwater, MN; Beth (Corky) Davis of Seattle, WA; Sue Sheeler of Nevada, IA; Diane (Randy) Hora of Cedar Rapids, IA; James (Felisa) Kinney of Hanover, IN; and John Kinney of Brooklyn Heights, NY.
A Marine Corps honors ceremony will be held at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter, Iowa, on May 16th, 2014 at 12:30 p.m. His family would like to welcome you to a celebration of life gathering at the American Legion Post 403 immediately following the honors ceremony until 3:30pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the family via Stevens Memorial Chapel, in Ames, Iowa.
