We honor and celebrate the life of Al Slonim, a remarkable man who touched the lives of so many with his kindness, wisdom, and humor. Al passed away on December 30th, 2024, at the age of 91, after a long and courageous battle. Though he is no longer with us, his spirit and legacy will live on in our hearts forever.
Al was a devoted husband to Florence Slonim for 66 years, a loving father to five children, a proud grandfather to eleven grandchildren, and a cherished great-grandfather to thirteen great-grandchildren. His family was his pride and joy, and he always made sure to share his love, laughter, and life lessons with each and every one of them.
Al served his country with honor and distinction in the Navy during the Korean conflict. He often regaled us with his war stories, blending humor and wisdom in a way that only he could. After his military service, Al devoted his adult life to the service of many causes where he made a meaningful difference (Muscular Dystrophy, Multiple Sclerosis, Beth Shalom Synagogue, bicycle refurbishment, etc.). In more recent years, Al dedicated himself to serving his community in Cary, North Carolina. He worked with the Cary police department in various capacities, including leading the bike refurbishing program, which brought joy to countless children (and adults). Al also played an active role in the Beth Shalom temple, where he was a beloved member and active community leader for many years. His kindness, generosity, and humor left an indelible mark on everyone he met.
Al had a unique ability to make people laugh, even in the most challenging times. His sense of humor was a gift that he shared freely, brightening the lives of those around him. Whether he was telling a joke, sharing a funny story, or simply offering a kind word, Al had a way of making everyone feel special and loved.
As we remember Al today, let us celebrate the incredible life he lived and the countless lives he touched. He will be greatly missed, but his legacy of love, laughter, and kindness will continue to inspire us all.
Rest in peace, Al/Dad/Grandpa/Great-Grandpa, you will always be in our hearts.
A service will be held January 8th, 2025 at Temple Beth Shalom at 5713 Yates Mill Pond Road, Raleigh, NC 27606 at 7:00 PM.
