Barbara was born at home in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, on December 20, 1936. Some of her fondest childhood memories were spent playing under the large walnut tree in her backyard, roller skating with friends, attending the movies, and participating in her church youth group. She graduated from Perth Amboy High School in June 1955 and went on to study fashion design at the Traphagen School of Fashion in New York City, graduating in 1956.
While attending Traphagen, Barbara met Robert Hess. After he completed his three-year enlistment in the U.S. Army, they were married in 1958. They remained devoted partners for 67 years.
Barbara took great pride in raising their two sons and was a stay-at-home mother during their school years. She later rejoined the workforce as an assistant activities director at a nursing home, a role she held for 20 years. She also worked as a designer in a florist shop, where her creativity continued to shine. After retiring in 2000, Barbara and Robert enjoyed traveling throughout the southern states, especially spending time camping and relaxing at the beach—their favorite place.
In retirement, Barbara developed a deep interest in genealogy and lovingly compiled an extensive and detailed family history, a legacy that will continue to be cherished.
Above all, Barbara’s greatest joy was her family. She was affectionately known as “Lovie” to her two sons and six grandchildren—a fitting name for someone who loved so completely and unconditionally.
Barbara is survived by her beloved husband, Robert Hess; her sons, Dr. Paul Hess (Sabrina) and Karl Hess (Molly); and her six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilbert and Jean Christensen, and her sister, Joan Farrell.
Barbara will be remembered for her warmth, generosity, and quiet strength. She leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion that will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
