David was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio.
He graduated from Macomber Vocational High School in 1956 and then served eight years in the U. S. Army and Army Reserve. He became a Toledo Police Officer in October 1963 and a Robbery Squad Detective in 1967. In September 1970, David resigned from the Toledo Police Department and he and his family moved to Boca Raton, Florida. He joined the Boca Raton Police Department where he worked as a Police Officer, Detective and Major Crime Investigator. After “protecting and serving the public” for twenty- five years, he retired from the Boca Raton Police Department in January 1988.
Soon after retirement, David was contacted by NCNB National Bank (later to become Bank of America) to join them as a Fraud Investigator. He served fifteen years with Bank of America Corporation, Corporate Investigative Division (seven in South Florida and eight in North Carolina).
He also retired from Bank of America in May 2003. In July 1996, David and Judy, moved from Boca Raton, Florida to Cary, North Carolina and then to Fuquay Varina, North Carolina. He fulfilled a childhood dream to have horses, and a barn with a wood shop. David and Judy were active members of the Westwood Baptist Church where they loved singing in the choir.
David is predeceased by: his high school sweetheart and loving wife of 59 years, Judith (Day) Scherer; his parents, Harold W. “Bud” Scherer, Helen R. Scherer, his brother, Richard J. Scherer and granddaughter, Kelly Ann Moss.
He is survived by: his daughters, Patricia A. (Joseph) Moss, Suzanne L. (James) Northington and Lisa M. (“Joey”) Olsen; nine grandchildren: Kristen (Nick) Pupa, Kati (Jeff) Holden, Jennifer (Kyle) Fenner, Kate (Ryan) Augustine, James (Ashley) Northington, Tom Northington, Robert (Shannan) Olsen, David (Lauren) Olsen and Becca (Greg) Keller; and eleven great grandchildren: Gavin Pupa, Weston Pupa, Kendall Pupa, Chandler Holden, Reese Holden, Will Fenner, Abby Fenner, Sarah Augustine, Tyler Augustine, Addie Olsen and Luke Keller.
The family will receive family and friends at Westwood Baptist Church, 200 West High Street, Cary, North Carolina 27513 on Tuesday, February 25, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. with a memorial service at 2:00 p.m.
A private interment will be for the immediate family only at Wake Memorial Park, 7002 Green Hope School Road, Cary, North Carolina, 27519
