Dorman Dewey Pitts, age 94, of Holly Springs, North Carolina, passed away on Wednesday, August 21, 2024. He was born in November of 1929, in Hagarville, Arkansas to James Edgar and Rhoda Mabel (Galentine). When he was 16, he moved to California and lived in the Corona and Porterville area before joining the Army.
Dorman enlisted in the Korean War in March of 51. He served in the 7th Cavalry Regiment where he was awarded the Korean Service Medal with 3 bronze stars. He was stationed in Korea and Japan. Dorman was part of the CP (Courtesy Patrol) and a Chaplain’s Assistant.
He met Dortha Dean Kunkel in 1954 and they were married in 1955. They would have celebrated 70 years together next year. Dorman and Dortha lived in Sacramento, California for most of their married life. Dorman worked as an operations manager for 34 years. He was a highly intelligent man who loved to read and learn. He could tell you anything you needed to know about history, politics, or the bible. He had an incredible memory for details.
In 1957, Dorman started attending college on the GI Bill taking electronics courses before moving on to investment and real estate classes. In the coming years, Dorman would come to invest and own multiple properties, working day and night. There was nothing he could not do.
Dorman often said music got him through some very hard times in his life. He was naturally gifted and could play anything by ear. He played the piano, organ, harmonica, and guitar. He also loved to sing.
Dorman was a member of Bethel Temple, which became the Capital Christian Center, for over 50 years. He was very involved in the activities at CCC and served as an usher for many years, as well as being a part of the Singing Christmas Tree every year.
Dorman was preceded in death by his oldest daughter Linda Pitts and his two younger sister, Juanita Faye (George) Ragsdale and Mary Sue (Patrick) Pledger and his baby brother, Albert Pitts. He is survived by his loving wife Dortha, devoted daughter Teresa (Joe) Machado, adoring grandson Logan (Farrah) Stark and loving granddaughter Hailee (Roy) Stark-Chavez, his beautiful great-granddaughter Mila and her baby brother (due in February), brothers Wayne (Liz) Pitts and Glen (Wanda) Pitts, and sisters Sharon (Gerald) Johnson and Belinda Kay (Junior) Harris. Dorman loved his family more than anything and over his 94 years gave everything to them. He was a man of great humility, patience, and kindness and loved by everyone who knew him. He was a man of God and we know that he is at peace.
“You gave us everything, and now we carry your wisdom and love in our hearts.”
