Edith Jackson Fitzgerald passed away peacefully on November 19, 2020, at her home. Edith was born on May 6, 1932, in Robeson County, NC, to the late Corbitt and Blanche Jackson of Proctorville. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Master Sergeant First Class of the US Army, James (Jim) Thomas Fitzgerald; son, Timothy Gary Britt; and brother Garfield Jackson.

Edith is survived by her three daughters, Diane Martin Pridgen of Apex NC, Candice Swinson of Apex NC, and Angie Gaines (Hank), of Dallas, Texas; her five grandchildren, Timothy Britt, Jr., Ashley DeSaix (Todd), Martin Gaines, Andrew Gaines (Erica), and Nicholas Gaines; her five great-grandchildren, Layla Britt, Ceva Marie DeSaix, Swin DeSaix, Avery Gaines, and Jackson Gaines.

Edith excelled in various areas of study throughout her life. She was a successful businesswoman and was fiercely independent. She never took “no” for an answer and persisted in each endeavor she put her mind to. Edith held a Master of Arts in Education from Fayetteville State University and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from North Carolina State University. She received a Distinguished Leadership Award for Economics. She was a member of Phi Theta Kappa honor society, a member of the National Association for Female Executives, and was recognized numerous times by Who’s Who of Women Executives.

Even with all her educational and business pursuits and accomplishments, she loved farm life. She and her late husband, Jim, ran a cattle farm, Shamrock Isle Estates, in Raeford, NC. She loved to crossword puzzles for fun, reading a fresh newspaper, fresh flowers, Dr. Pepper, and Lattes from McDonalds-just some of the small tokens of joy from this world.

I love you Grandma, and I miss you terribly. I know you are in a better place with loved ones, but it is hard each day to think of you not being here with us. You left the world a better place through your hard work and your loving, incredible spirit. I will never forget picking grapes off the vines together, peeling shrimp with you at Myrtle beach, and all the good times we shared.

With love forever, Andrew.

Although your passing has left a tremendous void, I know you are in a better place. I have lots of good memories... the time "Jerry Banner" got out of his enclosure (your prized bull) and we spent all day tracking him down only to find him safe about 5 miles away, what fun we had. Or the time when I was on the way to see you and you told me you had a surprise. When I arrived you presented me with this 2 pound, cold, dirty and near death puppy. Together we saved him and named him Chance because he had another chance at life. Or your last words to me..."just remember you will always be my baby," all wonderful memories.
I will be holding you close in my heart.

I will always love you. Thank you for the many gifts you have given me such as how to be strong when it was needed; how to be kind and compassionate to others and how to love the beauty in nature and being a good shepherd. You will always be in my heart.

Thank you Edith for giving me a beautiful wife, your daughter Angie, who has made my life full of love and happiness. Your many talents have shone thru to her and her sisters, Sylvia Diane and Candy. I shall be ever in your debt for these gifts.

Over the years you worked very hard at business, community work, religion and education. Your daughters too learned from you to better themselves thru education and accomplishments. The grandchildren, my children as well as my niece are accomplished citizens thanks to your example. Rest in Peace.

I will miss your bright smile and gentle laughter. My heart is sad that you have left us but know you are in heaven with Granddaddy and he is happy to have you by his side. Thank you for being my grandmother.
