Geraldine Amundson Weigert Ellis, 99, of Cary, North Carolina passed away on Friday, January 24, 2025, at UNC Health Rex Hospital in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Born on Saturday, March 7, 1925, in Morris, Illinois, she was the daughter of the late Harold Amundson and Alma Louis Cryer Amundson Subenski.
Throughout her life, Geraldine embodied love, strength, and resilience.
She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, with her family being the utmost important priority in her life. Geraldine was the matriarch of her family.
Geraldine’s journey took her across the country due to her father’s military career, attending several different elementary and high schools and graduating from Frankford High School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In her adult life, Geraldine lived in Falls Church, Virginia, Woodcliff Lake and Ridgewood, New Jersey, Pittsford, New York, Lee’s Summit, Missouri, and Cary, North Carolina.
As an athlete in her youth, Geraldine enjoyed playing tennis and softball. She remained active during her adulthood as an avid golfer, playing well into her 80’s.
Geraldine graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in English from East Carolina Teachers College, now known as East Carolina University. Her passion for learning influenced her decision to attend college, and she was honored by being listed in Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities.
Spiritual books were her favorite reading material. She had her very own personal relationship with God.
She was known for her impeccable style, always dressed to perfection, reminiscent of the fashionable ladies of the 1940’s and 1950’s.
A master at interior decorating, she transformed every holiday and special occasion into a beautiful celebration, ensuring no detail was overlooked.
An enthusiastic supporter of her children, Daniel and Wendy, Geraldine never missed an opportunity to cheer them on, attending countless gymnastics meets and other sporting events.
She was a skilled, self-taught investor, lovingly referred to as a “Smart Cookie” by her children.
Geraldine loved animals of any kind, especially cats. Geraldine was also a passionate devotee of the arts, immersing herself in theater, opera, classical and Broadway productions. She pursued her own artistic endeavors through pottery, oil painting, and playing the piano.
Her infectious spirit and warm presence made her a social butterfly, bringing joy and sparkle to every gathering, even later in her life at Waltonwood and then Brookdale Memory Care, where she continued to uplift others.
She was preceded in death by her first husband of over 40 years, Hans Weigert, and her second husband, Robert “Bob” Ellis, as well as her twin brother, Gerald Amundson.
Geraldine leaves behind a loving family, her son, Daniel Weigert, of Elkton, Ohio; her daughter, Wendy Conway, and husband Greg Conway, of Apex, North Carolina; her beloved granddaughter, Alyssa Conway, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and a host of extended family and friends.
