Jennifer Hermis Boston, born in the Bronx, New York on September 17, 1978, passed away unexpectedly on October 1, 2023 in Cary, North Carolina.
Jen was born to Roy and Hermis Boston in the Bronx, NY. She was raised there before the family moved to Suffern, NY while she was still in middle school. Jen grew up with her older siblings - brother Oral and sister Kerry - in a loving home where their Christian faith and values were an integral part of everything they pursued as a family. She was proud of her Bronx beginnings and her Caribbean heritage. Jen was a fervent believer in faith, family and friendship and dedicated her life to nurturing them. Everyone who met Jen experienced and loved her infectious smile, her respect for others and the love she exuded. Those who had the opportunity to observe and understand her became keenly aware that she was meticulous, detailed and action oriented in pursuit of her goals.
Jen’s church family was an integral part of her life. During her formative years, she was an active member at Bethel Gospel Assembly in NY where she served as an usher and taught Sunday school. A firm believer in worshiping and serving her community, Jen became active in various capacities at Family Church in Middletown, NY and Grace Church of Cary in NC.
From an early age, Jen had a passion for teaching and used that passion to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from SUNY New Paltz and a Master of Science in Early Childhood Education from City College of New York. Jen was an energetic and dedicated elementary school teacher for 23 years. She began her teaching career as a third and second grade teacher at Maple Hill Elementary in Middletown NY, where she taught for 17 years. She then moved to Cary, North Carolina in 2017 where she became a founding first grade teacher at Pine Springs Preparatory Academy in Holly Springs, NC. When asked why she wanted to be a teacher, Jen always stated that teaching gave her the opportunity to make a difference in a child’s life. She strove to be a positive role model for her students and that was evident in the way she lived her life and loved her community. Jen educated her young students using love, discipline, and encouragement, with the goal of helping to equip them to leave her class with greater knowledge that would guide them down the road to success. She fondly quoted Dr. Suess: “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And you are the person who’ll decide where to go.”
Jen loved to travel and explore and enjoyed traveling each year with her family and friends. Even after relocating from New York to North Carolina, she remained connected with her friends by planning “girls” trips each year. Travel invigorated Jen by allowing her to stay connected with her family and friends.
Jen is survived and deeply missed by her loving parents, Roy and Hermis, her brother Oral, her sister Kerry, her sister in-law Jennifer, her brother in-law Travis, her nephews Timothy, Benjamin and Elijah, her niece Naomi, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, god-children and friends.
“A golden heart stopped beating
Working hands laid to rest
Our God only takes the best”
