

John D Kinyon, Sr., 77, of Holly Springs, NC and formerly of Lancaster, PA, passed away on July 6 with his beloved wife, Jean, by his side after a courageous battle with ALS. Born on Feb. 14, 1937 to the late Donald and Esther Kinyon, he was raised on the 165-acre family farm in Marietta, NY.
He graduated from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, where he met and then married the love of his life, Jean (Bassett) Kinyon. He joined the U.S. Army and then worked at Security Trust Co., Rochester, NY.
John worked the next 29 years at Eastman Kodak Co. in Graphic Arts sales, where he had many roles and responsibilities, including Mid-Atlantic State Rep, and worked with many groundbreaking, new Kodak technologies, winning many awards and trips.
After Kodak, he worked in Graphic Arts sales for Graphic Services of NJ, and Graphic Trade Service of Lancaster, followed by 10 years at Manheim Auto Auction, Lancaster.
John was a musician with a beautiful baritone voice, singing solos in the Cornell Glee Club, as well as performing several leading roles in musicals in Brockport, NY, including South Pacific, Oklahoma, and King & I. He sang in the West Chester 49’ers Chorus and was narrator at Lancaster Symphony Orchestra for several years.
An avid volunteer, John was a Little League coach, Boy Scout leader, and member of the Penfield School Board and Penfield 175 Bicentennial Committee, both in Penfield, NY. He was an Elder and church choir soloist at Central Presbyterian Church, Downingtown, PA; Penfield Presbyterian Church, Penfield; and was also a Stephen Minister at First Presbyterian Church, Lancaster.
Loved by all who knew him, the most important part of his life was being husband to Jean for 54 years, father to 5 awesome children, and grandfather to 14 beautiful grandchildren: son John Jr. and his wife Claire (Armistead) with 5 children in Coopersburg, PA; son David and his wife Melissa (Wilcox) with 2 children in Westport, CT; daughter Julie (Kinyon) Soja and her husband Steven with 3 children in Tiburon, CA; daughter Deborah (Kinyon) McLain and her husband Timothy with 1 child in Apex, NC; and son Douglas and his wife JoAnne (Duffy) with 3 children in Vienna, VA. In addition to his wife and five children, he is survived by two sisters, Annette Raus of Marietta, NY, and Rosalie Nieznalski, of Otto, NC. He was preceded in death by his twin sister, Joan Sandberg-Kinyon.
A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, Lancaster, on August 2. Calling hour will be 10-11am and memorial service will start at 11am.
