

The son of Yang Tjien Sie and Twie Nio Tan, Joseph was born on February 14, 1935 in Pare, Indonesia. He graduated from the Bandung Institute of Technology with a BS in Chemistry. He came to the United States in 1964 to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he received graduate degrees in Chemical Engineering. He worked for American Cyanamid in Piscataway, NJ then Charlotte, NC as a chemical engineer until his retirement in 1994.
Joseph was an avid tennis player and represented Indonesia in the Davis Cup in 1961. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge of tennis and taught tennis for most of his life. He loved traveling and sightseeing with his family. A faithful Catholic, he was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Charlotte where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus, an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion and a bible study leader. After he and his wife relocated to Cary in 2011, he was a parishioner at St. Andrew the Apostle in Apex, NC.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 49 years, Maria; daughters, Hani and husband, Dr. Richard Brooks, of Cary, NC and Nori and husband, Dr. Chris Pennisi, of Raleigh, NC; son, Dr. Joey Sie, and wife, Dr. Mandy Sie, of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren, Henry and James Brooks, Molly, Macie, and Maddie Pennisi, and Matthew, Megan, and Elizabeth Sie; brothers, John Tikdjien Sie and wife, Liliek, of Jakarta, Indonesia and Harry Kong Gie Sie, and his late wife, Ira, of Melbourne, Australia; sister, Dr. Nani Muljono and husband, Johan, of Steenbergen, Holland; five nephews and two nieces.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 am Saturday, December 14, 2013 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Charlotte. Inurnment will be at St Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 6828 Old Reid Road, Charlotte, NC, 28210.
