

June was born in Sioux Falls, SD. The family later relocated to Pittsburg, PA, where June attended elementary and high school. June majored in journalism and received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota, where she met her future husband, Allen P. Schmidt. Shortly after graduation, June and Allen were married.
June was active throughout her life and worked in real estate and local government. She began her career in local government in Edina, MN as a volunteer on the Governmental Commission of the Edina City Council to review Boards, Commissions, and Committees of the City. She was later appointed to the Environmental Quality Commission, Special Children’s Group, and Civic Affairs.
She was the first woman to serve on the Edina City Council. As a member of that council, June served on the Board of Appeals, Human Services Board, Comprehensive Land Use Planning Development Authority, and as an advisory member to the State of Minnesota Board of Health. She was instrumental in providing input to the Plan for Tax Increment Financing for redevelopment of downtown Edina. She served in this capacity for three terms before relocating to Cary, NC.
After moving to Cary, June was active in the community, serving as Regent of the Asbury Station Chapter of the NSDAR, and founder and president of the Cary Town Investors. She attended Resurrection Lutheran Church.
June was an avid gardener and contract bridge player. She also enjoyed cooking, reading, and golf. She scored second place in the Edina women’s golf league in 1978.
June was preceded in death by her husband, Allen Schmidt, and her parents, Ben Austin and Caroline Austin Holton.
June is survived by her sons: William Schmidt (Carolyn Sutton) of Raleigh, NC, and Robert Schmidt (Joy Hellman) of Southern Pines, NC; granddaughters: Jennifer DeBrecht (Andrew) of Cary, NC, and Kimberly Cook (Brad) of Youngstown, OH; and great-grandchildren: Kaia and Lily DeBrecht, and Austin and Bennett Cook. June is also survived by her aide, Dawn McLean, to whom the family is grateful for her years of care and support.
A private memorial service will be held at Timber Ridge Presbyterian Church in Greenville, TN.
