Charlene was born on April 10, 1931 in Manchester, Missouri, to Charles H. Young and Gertrude M. Strothkamp Young, the third of five children. She grew up primarily in Kansas City, Missouri, and graduated from Bishop Hogan High School in Kansas City in 1948, at which time she met the love of her life, Norman Edward “Ed” Lloyd. Charlene and Ed were married on November 22, 1951 in Kansas City and later moved to Manhattan, Kansas and Lafayette, Indiana where Ed finished his PhD in Biochemistry. Charlene and Ed then moved to Park Forest, IL, Minneapolis, MN and Clinton, IA and by 1964 were blessed with eight children. In 1970, Charlene attended Clinton Community College and in 1972 was awarded her Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN). She worked as a Surgical Nurse and an Intensive Care Nurse at Jane Lamb Hospital and Mercy Hospital in Clinton, Iowa, touching the lives of many in the community. In 1979 she worked as a freelance home-care nurse with a terminally ill patient at a time before hospice care was well known, recognizing the need for at-home respite care in her small community. In 1982 Charlene and Ed moved to Ridgefield, CT and then to Sparta, NJ in 1984 where Charlene volunteered with the Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice Center in Newton, NJ, working directly with co-founder, Julia Quinlan, for a time. In 1988 she was recognized with the “Friend of Hospice” award by the Quinlan Center. In 1992 Charlene and Ed retired to Durham, NC and Charlene was recruited by Rachel Schanberg as a volunteer in the Duke Cancer Patient Support Center. Charlene worked with the DCPSC for 17 years, serving as a Board Member, President of the Board from 2004-06, chairperson of the Tree of Hope committee for several years, and volunteering every Friday in the clinics. On Thursday, December 2, 2010 she was awarded the DCPSP “Light of Hope” honor for her tireless work with the program. Charlene also enjoyed sewing clothing, quilting, knitting and crocheting, playing bridge, baseball, cooking, celebrating birthdays and holidays with great style.
