Michael “Mike” Lloyd Barefoot, 74, of Apex, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on November 9, 2024. Born on June 5, 1950, Mike lived a life full of love, laughter, and generosity. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.
Mike earned a degree in Political Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Post-college, he served in the United States Army. Mike went on to harness his entrepreneurial spirit and for over 30 years successfully ran his own telecommunications business in the healthcare industry.
Mike never knew a stranger and loved talking to anyone he met. His warm smile and welcoming nature instantly made others feel at ease, and he was always ready with a story. A jokester with an infectious laugh, he was known for his quick wit and strong opinions—especially when it came to hot dogs (red hots only) and Eastern NC BBQ. The White Swan was his gold standard, and he never missed a chance to share his enthusiasm for it.
He cherished his family deeply, especially his wife Stephanie, daughter Diane, and granddaughter Ava, who brought him endless pride and happiness. They were the light of his life, and he loved them beyond words. A true lover of animals, Mike had a soft spot for rescuing pets, especially those most in need of care and kindness. His home was always a menagerie of cats, dogs, and even birds at times.
Mike is survived by his devoted wife, Stephanie Lane-Barefoot; his cherished daughter, Diane Ernstsson (Stefan); his adored granddaughter, Ava Grace Leblond; his brother, Marshall Barefoot (Becky); his sister-in-law Denise Kamens; his brothers-in-law Rich Kamens and Les Kamens (Nikki); his niece, Stefani Parker (Don); and his Swedish family, Krister, Margareta, Magnus and Cornelia Ernstsson. He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Ruby Barefoot; his sister, Penny Taylor; and his parents-in-law, Martin and Florence Lane.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his memory to the Lewy Body Dementia Association, honoring his legacy and helping to support others impacted by this disease.
Mike’s generous heart, joyful spirit, and boundless love will be dearly missed by all who knew him. His memory lives on in the laughter he shared, the kindness he showed, and the love he left behind.
