She was born on June 16, 1921 in Washington,DC to the late Nels Peter Rasmussen and Nellie M. Rasmussen. In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her husband, Winston Otto Johnson; daughter, Susan Linda Richardson and great grandson, Christopher Michael Groom.
Norma was incredibly strong to the end. She was always involved with the family and loved to take trips to the beach, play bridge and entertain. In her later years, she went on a cruise at 90, rode in a helicopter along the beach coast line (the only negative about that was “it was way too short”) at 93, rode a ski lift to the top of a mountain for a picnic and in June to celebrate her 98th birthday, she went on a carriage ride through Wilmington. She loved decorating and was quick to share her opinions with you. Until last November, she attended every marathon for the Chris Groom Memorial in Richmond - even though the temperature was frigid. She was a real trooper at every cheering stop along the route.
She will lovingly be remembered by her daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Bob Reardon, grandchildren, Suzanne Groom (Mike Groom), Chris Reardon (Geri Reardon), Mike Reardon (Kim Reardon), Matt Reardon (Amy Blankenship) and great grandchildren - Chase Groom, Madison Groom, Gabrielle Groom, Austin Groom, Grayson Groom, Christopher Reardon, Taylor Reardon, Connor Reardon, Michael Reardon, Megan Reardon, Louisiana Reardon, Tatum Haupert and Curtis Haupert.
In lieu of flowers, it was Norma Johnson’s wish that contributions be made to the Chris Groom Memorial Fund (teamchris19.com) which benefits needy children throughout each year. With the Coronavirus Issue we have right now, it is even more important to take care of those in need.
A private family graveside service will be held at Apex Cemetery.
