

She was born to Henry and Lois Mitchell, Aug. 10, 1916, on a 300-acre farm in Franklin County, North Carolina. She received a BS in home economics from Meredith College in 1937. She married the late Eustace Horton in 1939, and they made their home in rural Chatham County, were they enjoyed a strong and happy marriage for more than 60 years.
Known to friends and students as “Miss Sallie,” she was a high school home economics teacher until she retired in 1979. She was an active member of Bells Baptist Church, directing the choir and teaching Sunday school for more than 40 years. She was passionate about her family, her home and garden, her students and her church.
Sallie is survived by one child, Elaine Matthews, who lives in western Wake County with her husband Larry. She also is survived by two grandchildren, Eric Matthews of Cary, N.C., and Rebecca Matthews, of Raleigh, N.C. She is predeceased by a daughter, Julia Arnold of Marion, N.C.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 28, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Bells Baptist Church. Friends are invited to greet family members in the fellowship hall immediately following the service.
Burial will be private in Bells Baptist Church Cemetery.
