Steven and I have known each other since we were young. I was so sad to hear about what happened.

He has helped me in so many ways like showing me how to pursue college classes while still in high school, greatly improving my academic success.

His brilliant mind and positive outlook on life made conversations very enlightening. I will never forget when he visited home a few years back and we talked for hours about life, work, etc.

He definitely knew how to live life to its fullest. I think of him often and cannot be more grateful for the time I was able to spend with him.

It is with a heavy heart that I say I will not publicly share this video of him reading a letter I wrote to him, but I wanted to share his smile and the first draft letter in these memories. 
Virginia and I shared deeply sweet memories and warmth when I sent her the video file. I’m so glad I will be able to look back on it to hear his voice, see his smile, his mannerisms. 
I love you, Steven.

Phoenix loved you so much. I think she loved you more than anyone that she ever met in her short life. She could recognize your giggles from a mile away and knew you’d have some kind of flannel to wrap her up in like a little bird burrito and tenderly carry her around like you’d just hatched her yourself. So funny. It was so crushing for both of us when she passed, but I hope you’re up there with her, Sweetie, and the rest of the flock who moved on from life.

I love finding pics like these. I think nearly every single day you would come over- or I would walk to your house- and we’d talk like spirituality curious teenagers with a bone to pick with the universe for withholding answers. Just giggling away, laying on the floor or out in the grass. Stargazing while saying the most out of pocket things you could think of. I can still remember your voice, the cologne you’d wear, the silly things you’d bring over or the stupid-teen-shenanigans we’d get into.

Remember joking all the time that we were platonic soulmates? I still feel that way. There is a part of me that is incomplete without you- but I would never try to fill that hole and lose the connection to your love and memories. 

I remember asking you to be my date for Junior prom even though you didn’t go to Polytech. You laughed and said yes without a second thought. It meant the world to me that I got to experience prom with a proper “platonic romantic date” as we’d say. You always made sure I would never have to be alone, whether you could be there physically or not.

Steven was one of my closest friends, albeit not geographically. Save for the last few months of his life, we never lived in the same state. We met in the Duke TIP program and stayed in contact over the years, and he was a major support for me in some of the most difficult moments of my life.  We had the opportunity to visit each other sporadically, though, and you can imagine how excited I was when he finally moved up to NC per my suggestion! It was an especially dark time for me and his presence saved me from myself. His admirable character was a rare one in this day and age, and I can only hope to model his selfless compassion.

Steven was a great friend of mine in high school when we went to Southside Church. He will be greatly missed.

My heart is broken for Steven's family.  I think of the sweet little boy who played with my little boy- birthday parties, meeting up for trick-or-treating- and the joyful and fascinating young man he became- living  a life of his authentic self with kindness and love.  I pray that strength and consolation will envelop  you, Virginia, and that you will always feel the presence of Steven's bright light in your life.

Hello. I did not know Steven or know his family. But I came across his name/face in the newspaper which led me to his beautiful, thoughtful obituary. I proceeded because his face reminded me of my son who I lost when he was 28 years old as well. So I extend special condolences to his Mother. I know almost exactly how you are feeling. And “feeling” is a poor word to describe how your soul has been altered forevermore.  I am so very sorry for your loss of your incredible son.

Since he left my heart has grown heavier by the day. I found a video today and heard his voice in the background and finally let some good tears fall. It was really, really nice to hear his voice again. Doing what he did best, teaching someone eager to learn some good ole fun facts. I wish i could hug him again and thank him for having given me the privilege to really know him, from the first hello to the deepest darkest corners of his soul. So instead, i will thank his mom. 

Thank you to the woman who raised this man so well that even when struggling himself, he made sure to help nurture, provide a shoulder or a spot to sleep, food to nourish the body, and love to nourish the soul. You are an incredible mom. I am truly so sorry for the loss you have experienced, he was truly a "one of a kind" type of person. 

I will choose to honor him by taking everything he taught me and growing, never giving up, and there will never be a day that he is gone from my mind. I see him everywhere and I'll attempt to color everywhere and everything as bright and beautiful as his soul does. He will live on in my heart until the day it expires.

Hello everyone, I wanted to let you know this (dignitymemorial.com) is the website that Stephen’s family will be using and hope that this is where you will share any memories of Stephen. 
His obituary  should be posted soon along with plans for a celebration of life. 
(Unfortunately echovita is a questionable obituary site that comes up on the top of many searches and has posted an obituary the family did not write and is soliciting donations for trees and flowers. I posted a note there to direct people here and it was quickly deleted. I am glad you found your way here )
