

He was born in Washington, Pa in 1938 to Lyle and Margaret Carter. Following high school, he graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor's degree in 1960, Master’s degree in 1969, and PhD in Poultry Science in 1971. He enjoyed a successful career in agricultural extension, serving at the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau (1960-1962) and Cooperative Extension Service (1962-1967), the University of Maryland (1972-1976) and retiring from North Carolina State University (1976-2002) as a professor and extension poultry specialist.
Tom valued community service and provided leadership and volunteer work throughout his life with 4-H and various non-profits serving adults with developmental disabilities such as Life Experiences, Wake Enterprises and Support Works. He was an active volunteer with the Poultry Science association and with the Apex Lions club where he was instrumental in assisting with the eyeglass recycling program. He had a variety of pastimes and hobbies, including beekeeping, stained glass making, and he was an avid gardener – sharing his produce with all. He greatly enjoyed participating in activities with his friends at the Apex Senior center.
He is predeceased by his wife, Vivian I Carter, his son Brian B. Carter and brother Robert Carter. Left to cherish his memory are daughters Jennifer Credle (Berry) and Jocelyn Pease (Kevin); 5 grandchildren Grant Credle (Kara), Brooke Credle, Anna Credle, Andrew Pease, and Lillian Pease; and 2 great-grandchildren Kevin Carter Credle (KC) and Kenan Michelle Credle. He is also survived by brother Glen Carter and sister Carol Powell.
Celebration of Life will be Saturday February 1, 2025 at 2pm at the Gather Station, 1900 New Hill Olive Chapel Road, New Hill, NC. Gather Station is a part of Farmingwell.org.
