Alice Marie Rektorik, 87, passed away peacefully May 16, 2012 surrounded by the love of her husband and family. She was born on July 2, 1924 to Obert and Emma Romslo in Lake Park, Minnesota. She was one of four children. She met the love of her life, Herbert, during World War II, and they were married May 25, 1946. Alice and Herbert had three daughters during their happy marriage.
Alice always aspired to achieve, and wanted badly to attend college after she received valedictory honors at her high school graduation. She wanted it so badly that she was willing to venture out on her own to pursue it---not an easy task for a woman in 1942. She attended Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota for a short time before conditions made the continuance too difficult. Even though she did not receive her college degree during her stay in Moorhead, she did accomplish something even more important. She met her future husband who was stationed in Moorhead for a short while during World War II. That meeting was the beginning of 66 happy years together.
As a wife and homemaker, Alice participated in leadership roles as a 4-H leader, PTA president, and Sunday school teacher. Her desire for a college degree did not wane, and as their daughters grew up she was able to go back to school, earning her degree in secondary education from Texas A&I University in 1971. Her passion for teaching was satisfied as she taught high school mathematics at Banquete High School for 5 years and for 10 years at Klein High School in Spring, Texas. After retirement from full-time teaching, Alice continued to tutor students for 4 more years, completely retiring in 1988. Alice and Herbert moved to Arlington in 1993 after they had both retired, to be closer to their daughters. In her retirement, never one to sit idly, Alice enjoyed many hobbies including assembling scrapbooks, doing needlework, and quilting. Her home is full of many lovely samples of her handiwork.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Archie and Vernon. She is survived by her husband, Herbert; their daughters, Carol Mundle, Marianne Hess (Michael), and Lee Ann Quigley (John Knox); grandchildren, Greg Hinze (Patty), Amy Hinze (Tim Whitefield), and Chris Plummer (Kira); great-grandson, Grant Plummer; sister, Vernette Berger; and several nieces and nephews.
The family sincerely thanks the staff in the Hospice ward of Arlington Memorial Hospital for the kindness and gentle care they extended to Alice and the family during her final days. The family is accepting guests at Moore Funeral Home Sunday, May 20, 2012 at 2pm till 4pm. Service will be held at Advent Lutheran Church, 3232 S. Cooper St. Arlington, Texas 76015 at 11:00am Monday, May 21, 2012. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Advent Lutheran Church in Arlington, Texas or to a Hospice Organization.
